Larry Wight Was The Class Of The Field Sunday Night At The New Cayuga County Speedway Out Running Matt Sheppard For The Win
WEEDSPORT, NY – June 26, 2011(By Dave Medler) It was a weekend long celebration for Larry Wight. On Saturday the Phoenix, NY Big Block Modified driver graduated High School with honors and then topped off the weekend with a win Sunday night taking the checkers in the 35 lap Pizza Logs Big Block Modified Feature over Matt Sheppard and a stellar field.
Wight took the lead from Sheppard on a lap 4 after restart and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way even with a late caution that put Sheppard on his back bumper.
“Matt (Sheppard) and Jimmy (Phelps) have been so dominate here, nobody has been able to touch them. When I saw Matt starting outside pole I figured we’d get a good second out of it tonight. The he gave me the top on that restart and we were able to roll around him,” said Wight after parking his Gypsum Express, Stadium International, Tracey Road Equipment, NAPA, No.99L in victory lane.
After the luck of the draw Matt Sheppard grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the 35 lap Pizza Logs Big Block Modified Feature. That lead was short lived as Larry Wight took advantage of having the quicker top of the speedway as he drove by Sheppard to be scored the new leader on lap-four.
With 10 lap’s complete Wight lead by 10 car lengths running the cushion as Sheppard tried to close the gap running the bottom. Ryan Phelps, Danny Johnson and Billy Decker raced for third through fifth.
At the halfway point Wight was on rails as checked out on the field still clicking off quick lap times. Sheppard and Danny Johnson ran side by side for 2nd with Ryan Phelps and Billy Decker showing in the top-five.
With 10 laps to go Wight’s car was working no matter where he put it as he was putting cars a lap down as Sheppard and Johnson tried closing the gap on Wight.
When the starter gave the 5 laps to go sign Sheppard was able to shake Johnson then set his sights on Wight as he started to cut into Wight’s lead. Then came a yellow with 3 laps to go that put Sheppard on Wight’s back bumper setting up a shootout to the finish.
When the green came back out Wight wasn’t rattled as he ran the top to perfection and cruised under the checkers for the popular win. Matt Sheppard, Ryan Phelps, Jimmy Phelps and Rob Bellinger rounded out the top-five. Billy Decker, Mike Mahaney, Eric Fisher, Tim Currier and Danny Johnson completed the top-ten.
“I knew the top was better, I was surprised he gave it up,” Wight talking about the restart when he took the lead when Sheppard chose the bottom. “Eventually that went away but our car was working good no matter where it went getting through lapped traffic. Matt showed his nose a couple times but I knew I had enough momentum to shut the door on him.”

Justin Wright , Sammy Reakes IV, Dave Marcuccilli and Tim Schneider rounded out the top-five.
