Danny Johnson Uses Small Block Power For A Big Win At The New Cayuga County Speedway; Sportsman Teams Respond
WEEDSPORT,NY – July 17, 2011(By Dave Medler) – Fresh off a win the night before at the Canandaigua Speedway, Danny Johnson took advantage of a redraw front row starting spot and small block power to put his Waste Management, No.27j, Bicknell in victory lane Sunday night at The New Cayuga County Speedway.
Johnson grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and held off occasional challenges from Jimmy Phelps in a win he dedicated to his daughter’s birthday.
Other winners on Family Autograph night were, Jim LaRock Pit Stop Convenience Stores Sportsman, Joe Reeves Stock Cars, Joe Williams Mod Lites and Nick Werner Four Cylinder Stocks.
By the luck of the draw Danny Johnson blasted out to the early lead in the 35 lap Pizza Logs Big Block Modified feature as Eric Fisher tried to keep pace with Johnson.
With 10 laps complete, Johnson opened a few car length advantage over Jimmy Phelps, Rob Bellinger ran alone in 3rd as Fisher and Roy Bresnahan showed in the top-five.
By lap 15 Johnson and Phelps were in a two-car breakaway at the front of the pack as Bellinger, Fisher and Bresnahan still raced in the top-five.
Phelps was still chasing Johnson on lap 20 looking for a quick groove to make a serious challenge for the lead. Bellinger, Bresnahan and now Larry Wight who was the fastest car on the track coming from the tail of the field ran in the top-five.
With 5 laps to a quick yellow would fly setting up a 5 lap shootout to the checkers between Johnson, Phelps and Wight.
Over the final laps Phelps and Wight threw everything they had at Johnson but to no avail as Johnson was to strong on this night and was the first under the checkers. Phelps, Wight, Billy Decker and Rob Bellinger rounded out the top-five. Matt Sheppard, Roy Bresnahan, Eric Fisher, Tom Sears, and Tim Currier completed the top-ten.
