Rolling Wheels Raceway Park: Fast Or Fiction? Find Out For Yourself July 4
Record watch on during the holiday when Stars & Stripes 100 fires up Independence Day
Weedsport, NY – June 18, 2010 – Recognized fondly as the ‘Fast Track’ throughout much of its existence, Rolling Wheels Raceway Park will be able to prove its worth yet again when Super DIRTcar Series teams roll in to the popular Elbridge oval July 4.
Leading the mighty Big-Block Modifieds back into Central New York for the ‘Stars & Stripes 100’ series shootout on Sunday evening will be current high point man Billy Decker. The ‘Franklin Flyer’ is not only acknowledged as being among the fastest around the entire DIRTcar Northeast circuit, he has also climbed to the head of the speed chart at Rolling Wheels during the newest millennium.
“When the track has been normal and consistent we’ve had some pretty nice stuff shine through at Rolling Wheels,” said Decker, who has earned seven of his 42 career Bilstein Shocks Fast Time awards at Rolling Wheels since 2001 --- high marks in both categories for the veteran chauffeur of the red LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell ride. “It’s usually quick out there and we seem to have a generally good package in place right now.”
Joining Decker for the Independence Day special highlighted by the only 100-lapper for Big-Blocks scheduled during 2010 will be track record-holder Alan Johnson, younger brother Danny Johnson and top tour point earners ‘Super Matt’ Sheppard, recent Orange County series race winner Jimmy Phelps, ‘The Natural’ Dale Planck, young guns Michael Storms and Billy Dunn, record seven-time Mr. DIRTcar Champion Brett Hearn, inaugural DIRTcar All-Star 100 titlist Ryan Phelps, and Canadian challenger Stewart Friesen. Race time is 6 p.m. with fireworks to follow.
“Rolling Wheels is fast enough where you use up a lot of the race track from heat racing right through the feature. There’s always a couple of lines to take making your way to the front. Size and speed separate the place from everywhere else we run, and attracting all the best teams for a lot of big events provides some of the toughest challenges we face all season,” remarked Decker, who was quickest under the clocks in both 2009 tour stops staged at RWR yet is still in search of his first fast time in ’10.
Rolling Wheels has turned into a speedfest for traveling teams as the top-11 drivers on the all-time list of fast time trialers have each collected at least one Bilstein award in the past. Alan Johnson, DIRTcar NE’s winningest Big-Block driver with 366 career checkered flags, established Rolling Wheels’ single-lap Modified mark of 20.029 sec. (112.337 mph) in September of 2006. Last season, Decker timed out at 20.343 sec. on Labor Day and 20.646 sec. during World Series Weekend.
Adult general admission grandstand tickets for the Fourth of July Stars and Stripes 100 are $22 each, Senior Citizens (65 yrs + over) $20, Students (10-18 yrs) $9 and Children (9 yrs. + under) Free. A special Family 4-Pack ---2 adult & 2 student GA tickets, 4 hot dogs or 4 hamburgers, 4 soft drinks--- is the best deal going at $50 apiece. Plenty of camping space is available in the main spectator parking area left of the front gate along the west treeline for a nightly fee of $10.
Rolling Wheels Raceway Park is located 2.0-miles west village of Elbridge on SR 5 just five minutes east of Auburn; also 10 minutes from NYS I-90 exit 40, 1.0-mile south on SR 34 to 2nd traffic light, 4.0-mile east on SR 31B (Brutus Street), then 1/2-mile west on SR 5, track on left Chatfield Road at State Route 5.
