Hamlin, PA- The Countdown Begins For The St. Jude Children's Hospital Firecracker 100 On July 7th At Hamlin Speedway
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
The premier racing facility in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, the Hamlin Speedway, has sat idle for the past week as the Smith Family scheduled a week off at the speedway to allow families and staff to enjoy a great vacation week off from the rigors of racing. All of that changes this week as the teams will get back into the swing of things in preparation for one of the biggest Slingshot races in the entire country that will be presented on July 7th with the running of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Firecracker 100. The century long grind will offer up a $2,000.00 to win payday for the event based upon a 45-car entry list plus contingencies that are totalling up with each passing day and will continue right up until the start of the feature event that will start thirty talented race drivers who will have to be on the top of their game just to make it into the show. The racing at Hamlin all season long has been spectacular with a quality weekly roster that has produced a star studded field of racing heroes that has created the excitement and the buzz of what small car division racing is all about. Coming off a record two-day show that produced a record 271 entries, new stars have emerged each week to take on the speedway regulars on the multi-grooved and highly competitive raceway. The weekly average of the All Star Slingshot field at Hamlin is a stout 32-car field and with the anticipated invaders looking to add their own spin to the mix, the Firecracker 100 has become the "got to be there" race in all of Slingshot racing events.
Last year the winner of the event was "The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca and he would like nothing better than to find his way back to the Hamlin Winners Circle and is coming off a win the last time he was in competition and will loom as a favorite for the event. The supporting cast of driving talent is like a who's-who in the Slingshot wars as former two-time Empire Region Champion "Chargin" Charlie Lawrence, many time track champion "The Oxford Express" Dale Kober, Kyle "Hot Rod" Rode, "The Mack Attack" Mack Brink, "The Sheriff" Simon Egan, Former National Champions "The Dirt Diva" Shannon Smith, "The Eynon Agressor" Ben Whitaker, Cody Kline, hard-driving Henry Anderson, "Double J" Jimmy Johnston, and former National Junior Slingshot Champions "The Tornado" Tyler Johnston and "The Wallkill Wizard" Tyler Dippel are expected to be in the line-up for the event. Troy Langendoerfer, "Magic Shoes" Mike McLaughlin, "The Carbondale Comet" Paul Ennes, "The Flying Dutchman" Richie VanOrden and part-time performer in 2012 "The Factoryville Flyer" Billy Clark and many more will add their own brand of excitement to the stellar field of talent expected in for the show.
Time trials will be utilized for this event and thirty cars will take the green flag for the century long grind. Lap sponsorships are part of the event with a portion of the money going to St Jude and the remaining portion to the driver and sponsorships will be taken at the Hamlin grandstand tower and the Rode Racing trailer on race day and will continue right up to the start of the event. This event is a great way to help the St Jude cause in "Finding Cures To Save Children". Legendary entertainer Danny Thomas founded the St Jude Children's Research Hospital in 1962 and as they celebrate their 50th year, please note no child is ever turned away from care at the facility and every donation brings the hospital closer to finding a cure to cancer. The Rode Family has put a considerable amount of time and effort into the event as well as a $500.00 donation and GA Motorsports Marketing and Double J Securities have recently came on board as supporters of the event. More sponsors for this one of kind event are needed and the story that follows may help individuals to assist to find a way in their hearts to support a very worthy cause through racing.
Danny Thomas was a not so successful entertainer at one point in his early show business career and with a baby on the way visited a church in Detroit and was touched by the Mass to such a degree he placed the last seven dollars he owned into the collection box and prayed for help with the looming hospital bills he was facing. The very next day Thomas was offered a part that would help him with his current dilemma and with that Danny Thomas experienced the power of prayer. Two years later when Thomas was faced with another career decision, he prayed in front of St Jude Thaddeus (The patron saint of hopeless causes) and asked the saint to "help me find me a way in life, and I will build you a shrine". Danny Thomas and his career began to flourish and the rest is history as he became a part of our lives with his great success on television and the movies. His "Make Room For Daddy" and the "Danny Thomas Show" came into our living rooms for eleven years and was followed by his daughter Marlo with her successful "That Girl" sit-com for five seasons. Thomas also did the pilot show for the Andy Griffith Show and was the producer of such shows as the Andy Griffith Show, Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mod Squad and Thomas has been credited with giving Andy Griffith, Mary Tyler Moore and Ron Howard their big breaks in the acting world. Thomas was an original owner of the Miami Dolphins with Joe Robbie but quickly divested of his interest with pro football.
Today, it takes 1.7 million dollars per day to operate St Jude Children's Research Hospital and public donations support 75 per cent of the funding. Through the generosity of the vast network of corporations and individuals, the hospital has grown to epic proportions and has gained worldwide recognition and has become the international beacon of hope for catastrophically ill children all over the world. When the hospital first opened the survival rate for childhood cancers was less than 20 per cent but through scientific advancement and research the percentage is 80 per cent today. The reward for any individual or business in donating to this worthy cause is the peace of mind and gratification in knowing you helped another child live a better life.
Fans should take advantage of this premier event as discounted grandstand admission is available with a fan bringing a toy, a coloring book or crayons to the speedway on race day. There will also be a Chinese Auction on the day of the race and auction items can be dropped off at the grandstand tower or the Rode Racing trailer. There is a driver challenge included in this event for all classes in competition as they can pledge a portion of their winnings to St Jude.
