Several teams took to the low
banks of Wall Stadium Saturday looking to improve their chances of grabbing
the brass ring and the $1,000 winners share at the First Turkey Derby being
run on the Wall Stadium Inner oval. A strong list of 35 plus cars appear to
be on tap for the annual event. Ryan Tidman ran the fastest TQ lap of the
day with Brianna Page only a tick behind. The ATQMRA Mourns the passing of
long time supporter, car owner and club official Carl Kindberg.
2015 ATQMRA Car owner's
Championship winning Team Boyd made the teams on track debut on Wall's flat
track. Multi time Champion Ryan Tidman had the opportunity to make laps in
the teams newly acquired Laffler Chassis car. The car features a paint
scheme similar to the tried and true Spitfire/Boyd Chassis that they used
to win the championship as well as the speed that carried Tidman to victory
the last time the ATQMRA hit the Wall flat track. Tidman in typical fashion
ran the fastest lap of the day for TQ midgets on the inner oval after the
team had time to dial the car in.
Also impressive on the day
was Brianna Page who ran the second fastest lap recorded for a TQ midget.
Page earned a top ten finish against the 27 car field on hand for the last
TQ show at Wall. The speed the team found Saturday should help propel her
into contention in the Turkey Derby.
Steve Whitt was on hand with
his immaculately prepared Modified Drinan TQ midget that features an independent
front end. Whitt gained speed as the day progressed and fells his new
engine program will improve his chances. Whitt has many Turkey Derby's
under his belts over the years racing Tour Modifieds, Wall Mods and
Sportsman cars but was always snake bitten when it came to the year ending
event. He is hoping his revitalized racing career in the smaller TQ midgets
will translate to better results in this years event.
Modified Star Zane Zeiner had
the Michael Murray Laffler TQ Midget on hand for some testing in
preparation for the indoor season and was able to work toward achieving a
comfort level in the car that he was unable to achieve at the high pressure
indoor events in the more relaxed environment at Wall.
Chris Allen was on hand with
the family's newly acquired Dart TQ midget to get the car up to speed ahead
of the Turkey Derby and in preparation for the indoor season.
We recently learned that
ATQMRA friend, car owner, and Club Official Carl Kindberg passed away. Our
most sincere condolences go out to his family and the countless people who
called him friend. Carl was always a fierce competitor with a number of
different drivers wheeling his Holmquist 10x that featured a "Just
Passing Through" sign across the tail of the car. Carl's son Bruce won
regularly behind the wheel of the blue car that is currently owned by Art
Lawshie and runs with the Vintage TQ midget club restored to its condition
when it had its success with the Kindberg Family. Carl was one of the
true Characters that helped make the ATQMRA great. He always had a
friendly approachable demeanor that was welcoming to new people coming
around the ATQMRA.
Another practice session is
scheduled for Wall this coming Saturday November 21st. Pit gates open at
9:00 am with practice from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
