Sidewinder Sprints – Stahl and Halter share victories
Finally perfect weather greeted the Sidewinder teams and 2013 season is finally underway. An all sprint Saturday night with 270’s, 600’s, 305’s and Sidewinders on the docket. Even during hot laps opening day bugs were apparent. No doubt the teams will be better for knocking off the rust and shaking down the bugs.
The first feature saw an a restart caused by newcomer Jonathon Hynes losing en engine . At the single file restart cone and a car not taking off caused a concertina backup of cars with Rohan Beasley getting the worse of it shearing a front axle in the melee. Next up Brandon Yarlett broke a brake heim tearing off a brake line causing him to coast to a stop. Later Jerry Strausbaugh lost a wheel while running 3rd causing another caution. Up front however was where the action was. For the entire 15 laps Jason Stahl led be less than a car length from Josh Chess ( debuting a new Henchcraft upright). Stahl would prevail and capture the first feature win for 2013. The irony being that Stahl captured his first win in the last race of 2012 and obviously is starting the season where he left off last year.
When asked Jason shared “ I must give a huge thank you to my dad for prepping the car. We made some progress late last year and once again tonight the car was fast. We actually build our own chassis and it’s very gratifying to take the win in something that you designed and built. It’s great to get the season underway and our team is looking forward to chasing the championship. Many thanks to the other teams for the fun each week”.
The second feature saw Rich Halter take the lead on the opening lap with Zack Overmiller taking up the chase in 2nd. Halter however in a complete turnaround from the first feature blistered away from the field to take the win by ¾ of a lap. A hard charging Jason Stahl made his way to 3rd and in doing so captured the overall combined points win and also the Hyper Racing Hard Charger award.
After the racing action Rich went on to explain “After a disappointing 2012 race season Halter Racing was hoping for big changes in 2013. With two blown motors in 2012 Halter Racing thought it was time to just go back to the basic’s and pull a motor right off of a bike and slap it in the car. This thought process seemed to have paid off for the first race of the season.
We went out for the first feature and the car was to say the least, not good. We started 6th and finished 6th after spinning out in 3 and 4. I just could not make the car work anywhere on the track. I even asked my crew chief “was it the car and was it my driving”. We made one major change to the car for the second feature and that change and track conditions were the right mix. The car was a rocket. I knew when I went into 1 and 2 wide open and it stuck I was in for a good race as long as I hit my marks. Going green to checkers proved that my winter conditioning regiment (eating all the time) has showed great benefits.
In summary it shows that the Sidewinder Sprints are the most cost affordable winged sprint division out there. What other class can you buy a motor right off the bike and go out and win races. Thanks to Rohan for keeping this class going for all us budget racers. Congrats to Jason Stahl for winning the first feature and for being the points winner for the night. Congrats to your team. I need to give a big thanks to Rohan Beasley for getting me to the track this week. If not for him my car would have been sitting for this week.
I owe all of my thanks to my wife Tara and my stepdaughter Kaitlyn for giving me the support they do and always being there to help. If it were not for my wife I would have never got back into racing 5 years ago. Also thanks to all of the teams that showed up this week and I look forward to more fun nights at the track with all of you.”
