Sidewinder Sprints – Path Valley 07/20 – Salony & Zielonis win, Yarlett claims overall
Back to Path Valley and the first feature saw a surprising heavy track catch some teams out. The opening lap saw Rich Halter make a move from his 3rd starting position to follow Reed Salony around the high side, however Rich had not quite cleared the outside car and the subsequent contact with the front straight concrete saw Halter helicopter without rolling. Rich managed to severely damage all 4 corners of the car but in the pits later that evening shared how happy he was that his Hyper Chassis was not damaged and the “bolt on parts” took the brunt of the impacts.
The second start saw Salony jump to the lead and he stayed up front leading all 15 laps to claim the win. Second was Brandon Yarlett with Jerry Strausbaugh rounding out the top 3.
The second feature saw Mike Zielonis take a commanding lead from his pole position until lap 12 when Reed Salony had a left rear wheel fly off causing Reed t lay it over on the back straight. The single file restart saw Zielonis once again in command with a rapidly improving Jonathon Hynes come home in second. Zach Overmiller completed the top three.
Once the points were tallied, for the first time we had an overall winner that did not manage to take a victory in the twin feature format. Congratulations must go to Brandon Yarlett for his consistent finishes in both features. Brandon Picked up the extra $100 bounty money placed on Reed Salony. The top 5 were separated by only 14 points in the closest battle of the season so far. The format and matrix are proving to be working great with the drivers passing cars at the front of the field gaining more than those passing further back and showing that the key is passing, not being passed to earn maximum points. Using Jerry Strausbaugh as the example this week, you can see his first feature he started 1st and finished 3rd to gain 93 points. The second feature saw Jerry start 8th and finish 5th but actually earn more points than his 3rd place finish. (98).
This week’s question;
Q. With Path Valley becoming a jinx this year for Rohan Beasley with DNF’s in at least one feature at each appearance, will he be able to finish both features on the Sidewinders return to the high banks next week?
A. No. Back to the drawing board for Beasley this week as he pulled pit side in both features.
Q. Reed Salony has taken the last 3 combined overall wins. Can a bounty of an extra $100 to the winner make a difference or will Reed just pick up the extra cash with a smile ?
A. Reed was looking good until his left wheel decided to part ways with his car ˝ way down the back straight on the 12th lap. Brandon Yarlett managed to pick up the extra cash.
Next Week’s Question;
Q. Last time at Susquehanna, Reed Salony managed to take both wins and the overall. Can Reed sweep again ?
Q. Brandon Yarlett took the overall at Path Valley to shake off some bad luck. Can Brandon continue that form at Susquehanna?
