Sidewinder Sprints – Lincoln 08/03 Salony takes 2

Sidewinder Sprints – Lincoln 08/03 Salony takes 2

Racing provides a strange diversity of highs and lows. There are times that teams get that very first win, something that those teams will remember forever. There are other nights when teams suffer mechanical issues that will be quickly forgotten the next time they have a good finish. Then there are other races, fortunately few and far between, that events of the evening are etched in people’s memories for eternity. Unfortunately our 2013 appearance at Lincoln Speedway will always be remembered for the tragic accident during the URC heat race that resulted in the passing of the legendary Kramer Williamson. The Sidewinder Sprints teams would like to express their condolences to the Williamson family and the Pink Panther #73 race team on their loss.

The first feature saw Brandon Yarlett jump to the early lead. Brandon managed to lead the way for the first 13 laps before Reed Salony managed to wrestle the lead away. Long distance traveler, all the way from New York Don Harvey followed Reed to take over the second position. At one stage these three cars were 3 wide down the back straight fighting for the lead with only two laps to go. Yarlett finished 3rd with Josh Chess 4th and Zach Overmiller rounding out the top 5.

The 2nd feature saw the schedule pole sitter Jerry Strausbaugh retire to the pits before the green flag dropped with clutch problems. With Halter and Murphy both unable to make the call the inside row slid forward and the field was set.  Zach Overmiller looked strong taking an early lead. Sometimes it’s better to be running 2nd and this was the case as Overmiller was running the mid track line and Salony was closing the gap running slightly lower. Lap 11 saw Salony make his move and take over the lead. Overmiller crossed the line in 2nd and a great performance by Tanner Hunsicker crossing the line in 3rd was unfortunately negated by his failure to report to post race tech and subsequent disqualification. Josh Chess finished 4th for the second time and Mike Zielonis came home in 5th.

The “Bring It On” Challenge by Microracing.com will be held over 3 races utilizing the combined passing matrix points and awarded to the car owners. With Lincoln in the books, the remaining challenge races are Williams Grove 08/30 and the final round to be held at Susquehanna on 10/26.

This week’s question;

Q. Last time at Susquehanna, Reed Salony managed to take both wins and the overall. Can Reed sweep again ?

A. With Susky rained out, some of the question didn’t apply, but yes Reed was dominate again and picked up both wins. Luck was on his side in the second feature however as his row had some cars not start and others started in the wrong position allowing Reed to start in 3rd as opposed to the scheduled 11th starting spot.

Q. Brandon Yarlett took the overall at Path Valley to shake off some bad luck. Can Brandon continue that form at Susquehanna?

A. Same again, although not Susky Brandon continued his form with an overall 2nd place.

Next Week’s Questions;

Q. The Sidewinders have a week off to enable teams to go to Knoxville and return t the track on 8/17 at Path Valley. With Rich Halters last two races resulting in DNF’s and having the points race tighten, will we see Rich bounce back or could we see a change in the points leadership ?

Q. With Zach Overmiller continuing to come close to capturing his first win, and Path Valley being one of Zach’s favorite tracks, can Zach earn his first checkers ?
