Sidewinder Sprints – 08/17 Chess and Beasley take wins
Unseasonably cooler temperatures for August saw a heavier than normal surface. With the heavier classic cars on the schedule the surface became a little choppier than normal. The Sidewinders first feature saw Mike Zielonis slow suddenly ( His clutch cable actually became dislodged by the ruts and pulled tight) and Josh Chess was left with nowhere to go . Their bumpers hooked and they spun to the infield where the cars managed to separate. The next attempt at a start saw Zach Overmiller take the lead until his right front spindle broke causing him to head to the pits. Brandon Yarlett also suffered from his car shutting off intermittently forcing his early retirement. Up front however, it was 2013 rookie Tim Townsend in control. Tim purchased an upright Henchcraft chassis earlier this year and is still running gasoline and trying to log laps before his fulltime effort next year. As such Tim knows that he is technically illegal and is subject to being DQ’ed under our normal 2013 rules. (except the “Bring It On” Challenge series ( as outlined below)).
With 5 laps to go, Josh Chess managed to make his way past Rich Halter and started to chase down Tim. At the checkers Tim was still 3 car lengths ahead to claim the 1st place finish. 2nd went to Josh Chess, 3rd to Rich Halter, 4th to Rohan Beasley and 5th to Mike Zielonis. That finish order was subsequently bumped up one position due to Tim’s technical DQ.
Although not an “official” win, Tim did take the time to want to thank a few people “I would like to thank my wife and kids , Premier Signs & Graphics, Butler Seats, Henchcraft Chassis, and thanking the Sidewinder teams for allowing me to run with the club. I am really looking forward to earning an “official” win soon.”
The 2nd feature saw Rohan Beasley take the jump from his pole starting position leading Brandon Yarlett into the 1st turn.. Over the first 8 laps Beasley extended his lead to a straight away with Yarlett continuing to chase. 6th starting Mike Zielonis made his way to 3rd and together with Yarlett began to close the gap. Beasley was able to hold on and take the win. When asked about it being so long between drinks, Beasley replied “ It has been a tough couple of years. I struggled with engines , trying to piece together bits and pieces and then this year Joe Robertson (Nextwave Electric) gave me a killer deal on one of his old engines. It was a game changer; I no longer needed to work on engines each week and could get back to concentrating on setups. It took a good engine to make me realize how far behind I had gotten in setups. This year I struggled with an erratically tight chassis. I reached out to Stan Fleming at Hyper Racing and we decided to change the shock program. Tonight was the first night with the new shocks and all I can say is WOW, what a difference.”
Beasley continued “ The night started off a little rough, I changed out some brake pads this week and cooked them in the first feature. I must thank Brandon Yarlett for working on them before the 2nd feature. Many thanks to all of the Sidewinder teams for making racing fun each week. Thanks to my wife, Katie and grandson, Zayden. They are normally here but couldn’t make it tonight. It’s a tough deal preparing a race track and tonight’s was far from the normal smooth surface that Path Valley is known for but adapting to track conditions is part of the challenge o driver and team face.”
This Friday night will see the Sidewinders make their 2nd ever appearance at Linda’s Speedway. With the 600’s allowed to compete with the Sidewinder’s ( must comply with the Sidewinder rules) it will be sure to have an impact on the season points standings.
The “Bring It On” Challenge by Microracing.com will be held over 3 races utilizing the combined passing matrix points and awarded to the car owners. With Lincoln in the books, the remaining challenge races are Williams Grove 08/30 and the final round to be held at Susquehanna on 10/26. The “Bring It On” Challenge allows the 600cc cars to weigh their normal 775lbs and allows gasoline to include cars from other areas that allow it.
This week’s question;
Q. Q. The Sidewinders have a week off to enable teams to go to Knoxville and return t the track on 8/17 at Path Valley. With Rich Halters last two races resulting in DNF’s and having the points race tighten, will we see Rich bounce back or could we see a change in the points leadership ?
A. The gap is closing as Rich tries to recapture the “magic setup” that he had before his big wreck the last time the Sidewinders were at Path Valley. Only 55 point separates the top 5 contenders.
Q. With Zach Overmiller continuing to come close to capturing his first win, and Path Valley being one of Zach’s favorite tracks, can Zach earn his first checkers ?
A. Unfortunately for Zach, the rough track conditions contributed to breaking a spindle in the first feature and resulted in a DNF and a DNS.
Next Week’s Questions;
Q. This week the Sidewinders make their 2nd visit to Linda’s speedway. Earlier in the year the Sidewinder teams were beaten by the local 600 teams.. Will the home track advantage help them again this time or will the Sidewinder teams be able to dial in and take the win?
Q. Once again, Zach had some bad luck. Will this be the week that his luck turns around for his break through win ?
