Sidewinder Sprints – 09/20 Young dominates and protects home turf
Finally the Sidewinders were able to make their 2013 debut at Trail-Way. With the first 2 races lost to rain this night bought perfect racing weather. The same couldn’t be said for the following day when the rain returned and washed out the prestigious Kevin Gobrecht Memorial.
With the top 5 knowing the importance of goof finishes in both features to provide maximum points it was Rohan Beasley that led the way early from his pole starting position. Jim Young however had other ideas and slid into the lead on lap 8 entering turn one. Young was able to pull away and Beasley was only able to slightly close the gap as Young entered lapped traffic on lap 12. In only his second start in his new Hyper upright, Zach Overmiller showed that he is starting to dial it in with a 3rd place finish. After a couple of weeks off, Jerry Strausbaugh got straight back to business with a solid 4th place ahead of another solid performance from Josh Chess.
The second feature saw New York invader Christian Wright get the jump until the caution flew as Beasley contact sent Beasley spinning in turn 3 resulting in him laying the #14 on its side. Unfortunately Zach Overmiller tagged the wall taking evasive action and was forced pit side with damage to the front and rear. Adam Meier tried to spin to the inside but unfortunately clipped the upside down Beasley resulting in extensive chassis damage that will most likely see Adam miss the remaining races. Beasley was able to be rolled back over and restarted but pulled infield after another 3 laps due to damage. Christian Wright looked to become another first time winner until Jim Young was able to make his move and go on to take his second checkers for the night. Wright finished 2nd and Rich Halter came home in 3rd.
The Season Championship is coming down to the wire heading into the last 2 points races. Only 18.5 points between 1st and 2nd, with 3rd only 4 points further back. The chase between 4th and 5th is also coming down to the wire with only 9.5 points separating them.
The “Bring It On” Challenge by Microracing.com will be held over 4 races utilizing the combined passing matrix points and awarded to the car owners. In addition we have now included the Sprint Nationals at Path Valley on 9/28. The “Bring It On” Challenge allows the 600cc cars to weigh their normal 775lbs and allows gasoline to include cars from other areas that allow it. With 2 races down and two to go Don Chess leads with Steve and Renee Overmiller in 2nd .
This week’s question;
Q. The next race on the schedule will see the Sidewinders make their 2013 debut at Trail-Way. ( The previous scheduled races were lost to rain outs.) Who will end up being the king of “TW” for 2013 by taking the overall?
A. The 2013 Trail-Way 600 champion Jim Young once again proved that skill and experience is the best combination. Jim had his car dialed in and hooked up from the outset and streaked away to take both wins and overall awarding him the bragging rights to King Of TW in 2013.
Next Week’s Questions;
Q. With Jim becoming the 9th different winner in 13 races and the Sidewinders making a return to Path Valley this week for the All Sprint Nationals, will we see another new overall winner?
