Sidewinder Sprints – 10/26 Dicely Dominates, Halter takes Championship
The Candy Bowl brings the traditional end to the season for the Sidewinders and this year it became the final points race and what an important race it become. With the top 5 positions up for grabs and especially with the top 3 only separated by less than 8 points . With the unique fairness of the twin feature passing points format the stage was set for a points race barn burner.
The first feature saw a turn one pile up with 3 cars sustaining chassis damage. On the restart Rohan Beasley took command and looked set to take the win. Hyper Mike Dicely had other thoughts however and managed to chase Beasley down and execute an inside pass on lap 12 of the 15 lap feature. All the heartache however was behind the front two runners when Mike Zielonis broke a chain with 2 laps to go while running 3rd. With both Beasley and Zielonis needing to beat Halter in the first feature with their respective 3rd and 5th starting positions up against Halters 11th starting position to have a chance for the Season Championship, it looked like Zielonis’s luck had run out.
It would all come down to the second feature. Halter was slated to start on the outside of the front row with Beasley and Zielonis set to chase from 11th and 8th respectively. As the teams lined up and buzzed their tires, the twists and turns that racing can bring continued. Beasley broke a chain while lining up and was forced pit side leaving the battle to Halter and Zielonis. Dicely was able to once again dominate in the new Hyper upright chassis and Halter became the rabbit that Zielonis chased. The dynamic became a little confusing with our Canadian visitor, Simon Couture, jumping a single file restart ( the French translation was confusing as they perform double file starts without cones) and Simon was subsequently sent back to 5th on the official finishing order leaving Halter in 2nd and Zielonis in 3rd.
After a few months of bad luck, the night belonged to Rich Halter who managed to finish both features in championship style and subsequently earned the right to call himself the 2013 Sidewinder Sprints Champion.
Second went to Mike Zielonis by the slimmest margin ( only ˝ a point) over Rohan Beasley in 3rd. Brandon Yarlett’s good performance was enough to secure 4th spot ahead of Zach Overmiller in 5th.
