Sidewinder Sprints – 2013 Championship Banquet

Halter takes the glory, Zielonis continues to impress.

The 2013 season saw our twin feature format being utilized for the first time. Fast from the first race was Rich Halter.  This year Rich picked up an engine, straight from a motorcycle wreckers, changed the oil and went racing. The cost savings were not reflected in on track performance as his early season speed left many teams scratching their heads. The points tightened after Rich was involved in a vicious front straight impact that bent all 4 corners. With only 1 race to go, Rich had actually dropped to 2nd position however his tenacity in the final points race at Susquehanna was symbolic of his season and he made every lap count to take the Championship by a close 16.5 points.  Heading into the last race, Mike Zielonis was the in-form driver and had clawed his way into 3rd. Mike would end up in 2nd position by a mere ˝ a point ahead of Rohan Beasley.

At the banquet Rich shared that his performance was due to the hard work of his crew, car owner/ wife Tara and daughter Kaitlyn.  Rich had previously retired from racing for a season but was soon 2nd guessing that decision. Like many families that race together, they enjoy the trials and tribulations as a team and in 2013 all of their hard work paid off with a well deserved championship.

2nd place in the season points went to Mike Zielonis. Mike is one of the cars that continue to utilize the 10” wheel and 12sqft wing combination. This is the 2nd year straight that Mike has finished the 2nd position and his late season form shows that 2014 might end up being the year that he gets to take the top honor.

3rd place went to Rohan Beasley. Heading into the last race, Beasley was leading the points. Often questioned for his precise maintenance program and its impact on results, many were surprised to see a mechanical issue cause a dnf in the 2nd feature at Susky. The pain was not so much losing the championship as it was losing 2nd to Mike Zielonis by a mere ˝ a point.

4th place for 2013 went to Brandon Yarlett. At times Brandon showed amazing speed but his season was plagued by electrical gremlins causing his engine to shutoff multiple times. During this current off season, Brandon had Ryan Greth at Hyper Racing examine and repair his wiring harness and Brandon is looking forward to avenging his 2013 finish.

5th place was earned by Zach Overmiller. Late in the season the Overmiller team made a huge decision to change to a new Hyper upright. It was a gamble that would result in one of two outcomes. #1 would be immediate success and a fair chance to take the title. #2 was that they could log some laps and get comfortable and sort out any new car gremlins.  Despite the best efforts of many, unfortunately Zach tagged the wall in his new car debut while avoiding a wreck. The subsequent damage wasn’t fully discovered for a couple more weeks of trial and error and as such #2 became the outcome. 2014 should see Zach hit the ground running and the Overmiller team is looking for better results.
