Sidewinder Sprints – 2014 – Path Valley Opening Night is upon us

This coming Friday night (18th) will see the Sidewinders knock the rust off for 2014 season with their opening nights action at Path Valley.  With 23 points races scheduled (still allows some weekends off for family activities) the chase for the championship will be a true test of man, machine and crew.

The twin feature format will once again be utilized every week.

For those that do not know the format, it is simple but as fair as possible. The pill draw lines up the first feature and a full invert of the 1st feature lineup becomes the 2nd feature lineup. Both features are 15 lap sprints. Now the drivers actually have 2 more racing laps / night (30 instead of 28) and every time they hit the track it will create extra action with all the cars, every race. This also reduces the “track time” required by reducing the normal two 8 lap heats and a 20 lap feature (total 36 laps) to just 30 laps. The spectators and drivers will be rewarded with more racing action and more passing. Anyway you look at it; this format becomes a win/win scenario.

The passing matrix rewards passes at the front of the field as more important than passes at the rear and is structured on a sliding scale throughout the field. Cars receive more points for passing than those that get passed actually lose. The combined matrix points from both features become the finishing order for the nights racing to determine payout and season points.

The Tire Invitational Challenge will continue in 2014. In the first 4 years so far American Racer / Lias Tire and and Hoosier Tire / HTMA both have two Championships each. In 2014 that tie break will be broken. This tire rule structure has proven that tires / tire companies can compete equally, have a tire rule and yet still allow competitors to choose their favorites. Our thanks must go to both companies for their vision in trying “something different” and their support.

With so many people sharing their disdain for how racing has become “cookie cutter”, with the Sidewinder Sprints it is anything but “cookie cutter”. It all comes down to individual choice;  10" or 13" wheels, up to a 16sqft wing, Micro or Upright chassis, American Racer or Hoosier tires. For those wanting cost effective HP, use the stock 1000cc engines. For those wanting to tinker you can have engines under 760cc and you can do whatever you want to them.

Every combination of engine/chassis/wheels won races last year. The hard spec tires save you money. You get to race at different tracks and have the challenge of adapting your setups.

With both car owner and drivers championships up for grabs, the question remains, who will become the 2014 champions?

Bottom line, winged racing can’t get any more cost effective and exciting than the Sidewinder Sprints !

Tire Shootout Invitational Results;

In 2014 the Tire Shootout Points will be the actual matrix points that the first 5 overall cars earn each night.

American Racer – 0 pts

Hoosier – 0 pts
