Sidewinder Sprints – 04/18/14 Quick and Zielonis take wins, Zielonis takes the points
With rain on Friday and more scheduled for Saturday afternoon, the Shippensburg track prep crew made the call to seal the track over to ensure racing would take place. This is a hard call for the track prep team as if it doesn’t rain, then a dry slick surface will be the outcome. If it does rain, then the sealed banked surface allows it to run off and raining to occur.
Quick from the initial start was Jerry Strausbaugh. Jerry has shown considerable speed since he changed chassis last year, and this year he has a fresh Spar Racing engine and is a sure bet to grab a victory soon. On this occasion however, it was not to be, coming out of turn two Jerry had a “mechanical failure” that resulted in his car turning hard right into the wall and a series of tumbles that eliminated him for the rest of the evening. Taking up the pole position was Austin Quick who quickly set the pace. Zach Overmiller was able to move into 2nd early before Rohan Beasley was able to take over and begin to chase down Quick. As the race went on Jonathan Hynes made contact with the turn 2 wall resulting damage to his rear that forced his team to sit out the remaining battle. Quick was able to remain in control after a late race caution and led Beasley and Zielonis to the line.
Rookie Matt Kreider led the field from his pole start in the 2nd feature but found the early laps not quite to his liking with slick surface causing many teams to push allowing some cars to sneak under Kreider coming off the corners. The hard work on the brakes showed as Rich Halter had “new brakes” this week that may have been working a little too well. Halter broke the brake reaction rod and spun the caliper causing entire brake loss and forcing him pit side. Mike Zielonis and Brandon Yarlett took over the lead positions and Zielonis was never headed for the remainder. Yarlett proved that perseverance with electrical faults has its rewards with a strong 2nd place finish. Rookie Matt Kreider impressed all coming across the line in 3rd, unfortunately for the Kreider team, after the first feature they replace a bent right rear wheel with a spare in the trailer and didn’t check the tire compound and it was subsequently found to be incorrect during tech relegating Matt back to the last car that took the green.
Amazingly, once again the results so far this year show the equality of the different engines /wheels & chassis.

This Week’s Questions;
Q. The Sidewinders are returning to Shippensburg this week. During other visits to the bull ring some of the local 600 teams have taken the challenge. Will one of the “locals” take the challenge?
A. This time round, none of the locals took the challenge, and with the dry slick surface, they might have had an advantage. Maybe next time.
Q. Will Brandon Yarlett’s electrical gremlin be resolved this week? Amazingly the car runs fine on the dyno, but as soon as it hits the track surface, it jumps into limp mode.
A. Brandon, with help from Ryan Greth from Hyper Racing was able to isolate the problem to the wiring harness and the new harness worked perfectly resulting in Brandon picking up a 2nd in the 2nd feature.
Next Week’s Questions;
A. This week will see a return to the high speed Susquehanna Speedway on Sunday night in support of the 410’s. With the Sidewinder rules allowing unlimited <7600cc engines, will we see a smaller engine /lighter car hook up and take the win, or will bigger stock 1000cc engine /heavier car be able to take the wins?
