Sidewinder Sprints – 05/04/14 Zielonis and Beasley take wins, Stahl takes the overall
You really wouldn’t think that it’s May already. Cold temperatures and a constant “weather channel” predication of rain kept some teams and fans away. The wide open spaces at Susquehanna Speedway has always put on fast racing action for the Sidewinders and with the 410’s and Late Models providing the track preparation, multiple grooves were created. The first feature saw Mike Zielonis take an early lead and Mike was never headed to claim the win. Brandon Yarlett was the big mover from 5th to 2nd and once again proved that his car had overcome the wiring gremlins and his speed had returned. Rounding out the top 3 was Jason Stahl making his 2014 debut. Jason had just returned 48 hours earlier from his winter sabbatical in Colorado.
The second feature saw Rohan Beasley and Mike Deimler run side by side before Deimler made the momentum work and take over the lead position. Deimler who had announced at the start of the night that this was his last race looked to be headed for the win and finishing his career in style. It wasn’t to be however as the car started to splutter and he slowed going down the back straight. Beasley once again took over the lead and was held on from a fast finishing Zach Overmiller for the remaining laps to take his first Susquehanna win. Later in the pits Deimler was reconsidering retirement as he and his crew felt that he still has unfinished business. Finishing 2nd was Zach Overmiller who is still trying to find the balance in his new Hyper upright. Zach made large strides in getting more comfortable in the 2nd feature and it showed with his increase in speed. Jason Stahl finished 3rd for the second time and was the only driver to make the podium in both races.
When the points were tallied, Jason Stahl proved that consistency in both features is required to earn enough points to take the overall win on the night.
The results so far this year show the equality of the different engines /wheels & chassis.
Micro < 760cc 10” wheels 1 win

This Week’s Questions;
Q. This week will see a return to the high speed Susquehanna Speedway on Sunday night in support of the 410’s. With the Sidewinder rules allowing unlimited <7600cc engines, will we see a smaller engine /lighter car hook up and take the win, or will bigger stock 1000cc engine /heavier car be able to take the wins?
A. With no smaller engine cars up to the challenge the battle became 10” wheels v’s 13” wheels. Using the same 5,4,3,2,1 points as used in the tire shoot out, the first feature saw the 10” wheels take it out with 12pts against the 13” wheels 3 points. The second feature saw the tables turned with 13” wheels taking 9 points to the 10” wheels 6 points.
Next Week’s Questions;
Q. The Sidewinders make their first Saturday night appearance for 2014 at Path Valley this coming weekend. Normally the Saturday night action provides a slick racy surface. Will we see another team make their 2014 debut?
