Third Time Vettel's Charm in Malay F1GP
By Walter Elliott
SEPANG, Malaysia -- Sebastien Vettel more than showed
he can win a FIA F1 race, as long as his Red Bull-Renault
RB6 lasts this year, here in the Petronas Malaysian GP
Sunday afternoon.
Vettel and Red Bull Racing teammate Mark Webber were
never headed during the 56-lap headliner on the Sepang
International Circuit. The German outdragged polesitter
Webber into the race's first turn and held him off the next
23 laps. Webber was unable to capitalize on his lap 24 lead
when a problem refitting a wheel nut on his lap 25 pit stop
put him 2.5 seconds back.
Vettel captured his first GP victory of the year by leading
55 laps and clearing Webber by 4.89 sec. He was polesitter
at the previous races March 14 at Bahrain and March 24 at
Melbourne, Australia, only to fall out of the lead - and the
points - due to separate problems.
A broken spark plug caused Vettel to sputter well behind
winner Fernando Alonso and his factory Ferrari at Barhain.
An ill-fitting front wheel mount put Vettel in a Melbourne
gravel tran, cedeing the victory to defending World
Champion Driver Jenson Button and his McLaren-Mercedes.
Second generation driver Nico Rosberg took third in
Mercedes' first factory podium since 1955. Robert Kubica
(Renault), Adrian Sutil (Force India-Mercedes), Lewis
Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes), Felipe Massa (Ferrari), Jaime
Alguersuari (Toro Rosso-Ferrari) and Nico Hulkenburg
(Williams-Cosworth) completed the top 10 finishers and
points earners.
Massa took advantage of teammate Alsonso' lap 54 engine
failure to take the drivers points lead. Ferrari remains atop
the constructors championship.
