South Plattsburgh, NY – Asphalt Modified Series founder and competitor Jack Bateman is looking forward to the series’ first-ever appearance at Airborne Speedway Saturday, May 29.

“It’s really exciting,” Bateman said. “The Airborne race is the first part of a big doubleheader for our series. We race the next day at Thunder Road. It’s something we’ve never done before. We’ve just signed a new sponsor, Bob Valenti AutoMall.com, which has dealerships in Connecticut and Rhode Island where quite a few of our teams are based.  This is our seventh season and we have 65 teams entered, which is a record for us.”

“I’m going to attend the Champlain Valley Car Show in Plattsburgh the first weekend in April,” Bateman said. “If the weather’s good, we’ll do some testing at the track to find out what gears to recommend. I’ve never been to Airborne, but I’ve heard the reports of how well the new track turned out and what a good job Mike Perrotte’s been doing up there.”

Bateman began his racing career on the dirt at Claremont (NH) Speedway in 1966. He competed on the original American Canadian Tour. In 2009, at age 64, Bateman finished fifth overall in the Modified racing Series championship point standings.

Jonathan McKennedy of Chelmsford, MA, the defending series champion, won three races. The series had twelve different winners in all, including seven first-time winners.

Another Modified Series competitor eager to return to Airborne is legendary car builder Art Barry, who has built a new car for his son Ken Barry. “I remember racing at Airborne back in the late 60’s with Bobby Santos as my driver when Guy Chartrand was the top guy along with Bill Wimble and Dick Nephew,” Barry said.

Airborne begins its 58th season with the Econo Lodge 50 for DIRTcar Modifieds Saturday, May 1. For additional information, visit www.airborneparkspeedway.com.
