Weedsport Speedway Installs LED Lighting System

Becomes first race track in America with state of the art LED Lighting

It has been no secret that there is a dramatic restoration project that has been taking place over the last couple of years at the historic Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY. The famed 3/8 mile racing facility in the heart of Central NY, noted for being the birthplace of northeast short track racing, has entertained fans from all over the country for over 5 decades. In 2013, Connecticut businessman Al Heinke purchased the property which was in a state of much needed repair. At the conclusion of the 2013 season, work began on what has developed into one of the most extensive speedway renovations in the modern era. To date, work has included all new Grandstands, a new concession and hospitality pavilion, camping upgrades, a complete new fan interactive pit area, a commercial playground for the kids, parking upgrades, all new fencing, track containment and more.

While several new construction upgrades are scheduled in the months leading up to the 2016 racing season, Weedsport Speedway will make history when the  lights turn on for the season opener in May of 2016. As the sun sets, the fans and competitors on hand will be awestruck by an all new LED Lighting system designed by Syracuse NY based Ephesus Lighting. The Ephesus Stadium Light is the same fixture installed last year at the University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and last year’s Super Bowl. “We commend our partners with Mohawk Northeast Construction and the Weedsport Speedway for bringing the future of lighting to this historic venue today as part of the facility’s transformation into a state-of-the-art race track,” said Mike Lorenz, President of Ephesus Lighting.  “The unmatched lighting quality that our LED lighting solution provides will enhance the atmosphere for fans and provide the drivers with a perfect stage to perform at their best.”

While Speedway management looks forward to the ease and efficiency, as well as the projected 75% energy savings that the LED option is sure to provide, they are also excited about the entertainment options that the Ephesus team made available.  As demonstrated in other State of the Art Sports arenas, Weedsport Speedway now has the ability to make the lighting itself part of the show. “Sports and entertainment venue operators all across North America have come to understand that solid state LED lighting is the premier lighting solution and a great way to enhance the fan experience and provide the optimal stage for the performers,” said Lorenz.

For Heinke, the decision to go with the LED Lighting Solution fit his vision perfectly and as a business owner himself, it was critically important to partner with companies that were local to the speedway “As Weedsport Speedway continues on its quest to create one of the premier motorsports venues in the country, we are proud to be working with the engineering professionals at Ephesus Lighting in Syracuse, New York.  At every stage of the lighting project, from design concept to installation, Ephesus provided guidance on our new state-of-the-art LED lighting plan, which will enrich the experience for the fan and competitor alike.” Heinke went on to add that it was a team effort between his staff, Ephesus, as well as the local electrical contractor hired to bring it to completion. “The “hands on” approach of Randy Knapp and the entire Auburn, NY based Knapp Electric team, ensured the successful installation of the brand new lighting system throughout the entire race track facility.  Utilizing local businesses creates even more meaning for us as we bring our dream to fruition.  We look forward to running our first event in the spring, so that Weedsport Speedway can once again highlight its commitment to the participants and spectators.”
