            Re:  2012 American Racer Cup Opening Weekend

 

FAMILIAR FACES IN VICTORY LANE OPEN $150,000 AMERICAN RACER CUP WEEKEND AT PARTICIPATING FACILITIES THIS PAST WEEKEND

 

BINGHAMTON, NY…The $150,000 American Racer Cup got off to a strong weekend as eight of the participating tracks held events this past weekend.  The Modified victory lanes throughout the northeast were dotted with familiar faces on the opening weekend of the cup.

 

Defending American Racer Cup Champion Billy Pauch has made an early season statement as he won again this past weekend at the New Egypt Speedway in New Jersey.  Duane Howard, the 2010 American Racer Cup Champion also won for the second consecutive week at the Grandview Speedway (PA).

 

Pat Ward was the opening night winner at the Five Mile Point Speedway (NY) by recording his second victory in the annual Southern Tier Open.  Craig VonDohren was the victor on Sunday at the Big Diamond Raceway (PA). 

 

Mike Barone has looked strong at early season Race of Champions Modified Tour events and on Saturday night he rallied to the victory at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.  Delaware Speedway opened up to a capacity crowd on Saturday night with H.J. Bunting taking top honors there.

 

For Stewart Friesen victory lane on the American Racer Cup was nothing new but the venue was different.  Friesen won by over a straightaway at the Fonda Speedway on Saturday night.  The American Racer Cup weekend was officially started on Friday night at the Glen Ridge Speedway as their teams were competing for the first time as part of the program.  Familiar names Friesen, Bobby Varin and Matt Sheppard put on a driving clinic as they battled for the victory at the “Ridge”.  Sheppard would emerge the winner as a new chapter begins at Glen Ridge.

 

Driver’s have until May 14th to register for the American Racer Cup.

This Sunday the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour will take place at Five Mile Point Speedway outside of Binghamton, NY.  Racing on Sunday will begin at 4 p.m.
