SNYDER STOPS CANNONíS WINNING STREAK WITH LAST-LAP PASS FOR FIRECRACKER 30 SPRINT CAR VICTORY; YODER SCORES THE HAT TRICK WITH THIRD LATE MODEL WIN; WILD FINISH NETS JOHNSON PRO STOCK WIN; ROADRUNNER FIRST TO SHERMAN
SELINSGROVE, Pa. Ė Nate Snyder of Halifax made a last-lap, final-turn pass
by Pat Cannon of Etters to win the ninth annual Middleswarth Potato Chips
Firecracker Special for 358 sprint cars at Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday
For Snyder, driving the Pro Lawn/Expert Settlement Services No. 56, the
$2,000 victory in the 30-lap race marked his second of the season and the
16th of his career at Selinsgrove. Snyder previously won the Firecracker
race as a 40-lap contest in 2005. His win Saturday night also ended the
four-race winning streak held by Cannon, who was the nightís fast qualifier
for the fourth time this season with a lap of 18.236.
Dylan Yoder of Selinsgrove pulled off the hat trick by winning his third
consecutive 25-lap late model feature of the season at the wheel of the
Krenn Racing No. 32. Yoderís first two wins came at the wheel of his father
Jimís No. 27.
Matt Johnson of New Berlin was awarded the win in the 15-lap pro stock
feature following a four-wide battle racing off turn four for the checkered
flag that resulted in a disqualification of Dave Brouse Jr. for
Jason Sherman of Tower City won his first career race at Selinsgrove in the
12-lap roadrunner main event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the PA Speedweek Finale for 410 sprint
cars at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4. There will be no racing at the track the
weekend of July 9-10 for the summer break.
In the sprint car feature, third-place starter Davie Franek powered into
the lead on the first lap. The caution flag unfurled for the only time
during the event after the completion of the first lap when Josh Beard and
Alan Spriggle stopped in turn two. When the race resumed, Franek stretched
his lead over polesitter Brian Nornhold and second-place starter Jason
On lap three, the No. 3 driven by Pat Cannon rocketed into the third
position. Cannon then passed Nornhold for second on the sixth lap. Nate
Snyder, who started seventh, advanced to third using the high line of the
speedway on the seventh circuit.
By lap eight, the leaders began to encounter slower traffic, creating a
close, high-speed chase for the lead between Franek, Cannon, and Snyder. On
the 15th circuit, Snyder made a thrilling outside pass by both Cannon and
Franek for the lead exiting the second turn.
While Snyder set a torrid pace, Cannon kept the new leader in his sites.
Racing down the backstretch, Cannon took the lead for first time with an
inside pass by Snyder on the 19th circuit.
With five laps remaining, it appeared to be Cannonís race as he began to
distance himself from Snyder in traffic. On the final lap, however, Snyder
quickly gained real estate and made a breathtaking pass by Cannon racing
off turn four for the lead and win by just .06 of a second. Cannon settled
for second with Franek, Blane Heimbach, and TJ Stutts rounding out the top
Carl Graves, who started on the pole, led the first two laps of the late
model feature. On the third circuit, third-place starter Kyle Rhoads drove
into the lead, while Graves, sixth-place starter Brett Schadel, and
10th-place starter Dylan Yoder raced in the top five.
D. Yoder quickly made his way to the front of the pack, taking over the
second position on the sixth circuit. A lap later, D. Yoder drove around
Rhoads racing off turn four for the lead.
While D. Yoder stretched his lead to a straightaway, Rhoads maintained
second through lap 22, when ninth-place starter Jeff Rine began to show
some speed and move into the runner up position. At the finish, D. Yoder
posted a convincing 4.5 second margin of victory over Rine, Rhoads, Jim
Yoder, and Brett Schadel.
Polesitter Rick Bixlier drove into the lead at the start of the pro stock
feature. On the fifth circuit, fourth-place starter Matt Johnson took
command of the field with a pass in turn three. On a lap seven restart,
sixth-place starter Shaun Miller powered to the bottom of the race track to
challenge Johnson for the lead only to have his race car fall off the pace.
On the 10th lap, AJ Hoffman, who started deep in the pack in the 18th
position, stormed around the top of the race track and into the lead in
turns three and four. With four laps remaining, 10th-place starter Dave
Brouse Jr. powered into second and began to pressure Hoffman for the lead.
While Hoffman maintained an edge around the top of the race track in turns
one and two, Brouse was pulling even with him in turns three and four. On
the final lap, however, Brouse made contact with Hoffman in a
wheel-to-wheel duel for the lead and win, driving both cars into the fourth
turn wall. While everyone was able to remain under power, a four-wide shoot
out unfolded for the lead down the frontstretch. When Brouse was
disqualified for rough-riding, the win was awarded to Johnson over Mike
Kiehl, AJ Stroup, Hoffman, and Jason Smith.
Fifth-place starter Eric Pinkerton led the first lap of the roadrunner
feature until fourth-place starter Jason Sherman powered into the lead. On
the fifth circuit, point leader Brad Mitch and polesitter Brian Johnson
tangled on the backstretch.
When the raced resumed, Sherman continued to set the pace as ninth-place
starter Ricky Bender advanced to second. On the final lap, Bender attempted
to reel in Sherman entering turn three but came up short at the finish
line. Sherman was victorious by 1.6 seconds over Bender, Pinkerton, Bob
Bussey, and Mitch, who rebounded for a top five finish.
