ERNIE AND MARILYN SAXTON TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE EMPA HALL OF FAME
Additional Hall of Fame nominees announced
TRENTON, NJ (November 15).…..Former Eastern Motorsport Press Association president Ernie Saxton and his wife, Marilyn, who served as EMPA’s executive secretary have been unanimously named to the EMPA Hall of Fame and will be inducted during the media group’s annual Convention in January. In addition, EMPA members will vote on the inclusion of three additional inductees.
This diverse group includes track and race promoters Jack Arute Sr. and Lindy Vicari, regional drivers Sammy Beavers and Tom Peck, Daytona 500 winner Geoff Bodine, former sprint car driver and current television commentator Brad Doty, retired NHRA funny car champion Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, pioneer racing photographer John “Ace” Lane Sr., and speedway announcer Bill Singer.
Induction ceremonies for the EMPA Hall of Fame’s newest members will take place during EMPA/NASCAR Hall of Fame Dinner, Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
During the evening, other awards will be presented including the Al Holbert Memorial National Driver of the Year, the Richie Evans Memorial Northeast Driver of the Year, the T. Wayne Robinson Newsmaker of the Year, the Junie Donlavey Spirit of the Sport Award, and the John Blewett III Young Gun Award Presented by New England Fuels. EMPA members are currently casting their ballots for these prestigious awards.
EMPA members are also voting for the recipients of the Frank Blunk Memorial Writer Award, the Ace Lane Sr. Memorial Photography Award, and the Art Mc Hugh Memorial Award for the member who works tirelessly behind the scenes for the organization and improvements of motorsports media coverage.
Among the annual Convention’s highlights are the Pocono Raceway/EMPA Writers Contest and the Brice’s NAPA/EMPA Photography Contest that reward members who have demonstrated outstanding work in their respective fields during the past year.
The annual EMPA Convention includes press conferences and presentations by national and regional sanctioning bodies, race tracks, and racing personalities. This year’s featured keynote speaker is Don Miller, whose highly-acclaimed book, Miller Time, A Lifetime of Speed, detailed his many years in the automotive and racing industries and his close association with Ryan Newman, Rusty Wallace and Roger Penske, among others.
Seminars on writing and photography, as well as informal meetings with folks associated with the sport and hospitality activities are also part of the three-day Convention. Among the event’s sponsors are NASCAR and the IZOD IndyCar Series.
