Cash Awards Being Offered for ‘Run for the Cannoli’ 5K
$100 - $75 - $50 to top three male & female finishers + $50 to set new course record
(HAZLETON, PA 7-18-12) With the 9th Annual ‘Run for the Cannoli’ 5K one month away, event organizers have announced an enticement to the top finishers is once again being offered.
The top three male and female finishers will receive cash awards with $100 to win, $75 for second and $50 to place third.
Also, anyone who can set a new course record, both male and female, will be awarded a $50 cash bonus.
Last year former Lock Haven University cross country and track and field standout Nick Hilton of Reading walked away with over $200 in cash and prizes for his record setting performance in the 3.1-mile trek.
Hilton ran a time of 15:43 and beat former Bloomsburg University harrier Misha Litvinov of Drums who crossed the finish line at 15:54 making it the closest race to date.
Samantha Snead of Moscow also picked up the same first place cash for her efforts with an excellent run of 18:24. Her time broke a seven year record that was formally held by Patty Fulton.
Snead bested defending race winner Samantha Snukis of Saint Clair who ran a very respectable 19:24 which was a 33-second improvement from 2010.
Snead and Snukis are the only females to run under 20:00 in the eight year history of the race.
Considered a mid-summer classic among Northeast PA running events, the race has become a popular to-do on many runners list. Applications have thus far been coming in from as far away as Connecticut, New York and the Philadelphia area.
Hilton will be back to defend as will six-time Cannoli winner Jeff Skwierz. Inaugural Cannoli 5k winner Brent Edwards of Hazle Township, the only other male winner, will be running as well. Likewise Litvinov has made his intentions known that he will be looking to improve by one spot in this year’s race.
They can expect a stellar field to join them at the starting line when the gun goes off at 3:00 p.m., August 19.
The race runs in conjunction with the St. Mauro’s Italian Festival held at Queen of Heaven Parish 12th and Vine Streets in Hazleton.
All runners will receive a t-shirt (while supplies last), $5.00 in festival food tickets and a cannoli. Race will be run rain or shine.
