SPIRIT SPEEDWAY OPENING DAY WINS TO SMITH, SWIFT, THOMPSON & DUNKELBERGER
Finally - after three consecutive Friday night rain outs, Spirit Speedway moved to Sunday for the 2019 season opener and got some cooperation from Mother Nature.
Matt Smith picked up the win in the Ace Overhead Door Company 600 Micro Sprint feature after a fierce duel with Stony Point, NY driver, Damon Paul. Paul led the first twelve laps of the twenty lap main event. It took several tries to complete lap twelve but once the lap was scored, Smith dropped to the inside on the backstretch to take the lead. Paul kept pace with Smith but was unable to mount another challenge for the lead.
Smith, who picked up six wins last season, led Paul to the checkered flag, followed by 2018 Spirit Champion, Mike Rutherford, in third. Gary Borzowski battled through out the event, coming home with a strong fourth place finish ahead of Billy Koch whose fifth place finish was his best Spirit performance to date. Jon Keller, PJ Williams, Kyle Spence, Bobby Butler and Christian Bruno completed the top ten at the finish.
"The first one of the year feels awesome," said Smith from Victory Lane.
Alex Swift took the lead in the JS-Weld-Rite/Mongoose Chassis on lap seven when race leader, Brandon Shipley broke during a caution. Swift endured many restarts after frequent cautions to capture is first win of the season and eighth career victory at Spirit Speedway. Swift was behind the wheel of a new John Blanda owned No. 15 RTS chassis. "John told me I had to win more this year," Swift stated. Swift dedicated the win to Blanda's father who passed away several days before.
It was a good night for Blanda's equipment. Blanda loaned an engine to Steve Coslop who finished second, chasing Swift for the win. Kyle Weiss started out the season with a strong third place finish followed by Mike Rutherford and Glenn Macomber. Shea Wills, Jason Nardelli, Barry Pollard, Junior Ramer and Jonathan John rounded out the top ten.
Justin Thompson picked up his first Slingshot victory on the Spirit quarter mile, beating last year's winningest driver, Dave McCollough to the flag. Nick Vinciuerra, Jason Kraycirik and Dave Morrell completed the top five.
Jason Dunkelberger was the race winner in the Mini Late Model feature event after taking the lead coming out of turn two on the lap one. Dustin Dunkelberger finished second.
