LAUBACH SAILS TO FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AT BRIDGEPORT
HILL, FREES & PECK ARE REPEAT WINNERS
It was a battle between the two most recent Bridgeport Speedway Big Block Modified Champions as 2012 Champion, Rick Laubach fought off the challenges of last season's champion, Ryan Watt to capture his first win of the season in the Spirit Dodge Big Block Modified Feature event at the Bridgeport Speedway on Saturday night.
The win moved Laubach into a tie for sixth on the All Time Feature Winners List at the Logan Township speedplant. Laubach's thirty-six Bridgeport wins ties him with Shillington, PA driver, Kenny Brightbill.
Polesitter, Mike Franz took the lead over Scott Ambruster at the wave of the green flag but incidents at both ends of the track forced a complete restart. When the first lap was completed, it was Franz who led the field to the stripe as Laubach took over second. After hard contact with the turn two wall, Ron Roberts drew a caution on lap two, setting up another restart. This time, Laubach powered into the lead from the outside.
By lap five, Watt had driven into second after starting seventeenth on the grid. A lap eight restart following a caution for the slowing car of Stan Frankenfield, set Watt up to restart from the outside of Laubach. Now it was Watt's turn to power into the lead, driving on the outside cushion, on lap nine.
Watt switched to the outside lane for a lap ten restart after a false start sent the field back to caution.
Watt led through lap nineteen when Mike Barone had another strong finish end after hard contact with the turn two wall. On the restart, Laubach was able to drive underneath Watt to retake the lead. Once out in front, Laubach drove away from the field, taking his first checkered flag of the season. Watt finished second. Wade Hendrickson drove to a third place finish in the Pondish #6 after switching to the Ford Small Block power plant. Jimmy Horton finished fourth while Richie Pratt Jr rallied from a lap one incident to finish fifth.
Travis Hill drove from mid-pack into the lead on lap four of the 811 Dig Safely Crate Sportsman Feature, finding the outside cushion to his liking as he drove to the front of the field. Jeff Bubori was the early race leader until Hill arrived on the scene. Hill was the winner on opening night but had his work cut out for him after starting in mid-pack.
CJ Jones drove to a second place run with Steve Searock taking third at the line. Brad Roberts finished fourth ahead of Jesse Bonaduce. Dave Damiano's trailed Hill in second for most of the race until mechanical ills had him heading to the pits in the final laps of the race. Scott Hulmes eighth place finish earned him the Searock Hard Charger award for this race.
Ron Frees made it three for three has he picked up the win in the Stewart Stainless Outlaw Stock Feature event. Terry Griffin had his best outing of the season. Griffin led for the first ten laps until a caution flag realigned the field for the restart. Griffin went on to finish second with a hard charging Jeremy Doerr racing from the back of the pack to take third. Ed Tinsman finished fourth with Jeff Dirkes rallying to a fifth place finish after starting scratch on the field.
After losing the motor in his #39 during last week's Hoffman Memorial tribute, Matthew Peck returned to the Speedway this week behind the wheel of Brett Ballard's #5B and again drove to the win in the D.A. Auto Body & Auto Repair Rookie Feature. Mike Liccardi led for the first half of the race before being overtaken by Peck following a restart.
Richie Pratt Sr. showed that he still knows his way around the Bridgeport Speedway as he took the win in the Garden State Vintage feature event.
