Accord, NY- September 16, 2015: Reviewing The History Of The King Of The Catskills Event At Accord Speedway
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
The always popular King of the Catskills event at the Accord Speedway will be a great way to cap off a solid year of racing events in the Catskill Mountains as some of the big names in the Northeastern Modified ranks are set to converge on the tiny village of Accord, New York this coming Friday, September 18th night to go head to head in a sixty lap battle royal to be named King of the event and along with it a big $5,000.00 plus payday offered up by Accord Speedway Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer. The expected huge crowd will have the opportunity to see all of their favorite stars in action on the always pristine, semi-banked quarter mile speedplant as three divisions of racing have been selected to work their magic out on the raceway. As always, the hard working Accord Promoter Gary Palmer has been feverishly at task to attend to his duties to give the the talented combatants a moist and tacky track surface they can race from wall to wall throughout the evening. The event is sponsored by Insinger Performance and Sunoco Race Fuels located in Dushore, Pennsylvania.
The evening of speed will bring out the United Pump and Tank sponsored mighty modifieds in a sixty lap excursion as the hometown aces of the Accord Speedway will defend the home turf against the anticipated invaders of the Modified world. The evening will bring in the King of the Catskills 60 lap event Modified event that will pay $5,000.00 to the first driver under the checkered flag at the end of 60 laps of the hard driving excitement. The speedway office has received many calls regarding the event and drivers expected in for the event include the Rochester, New York racing surgeon, "The Doctor" Danny Johnson. Johnson has enjoyed another great season in the racing wars and has always been a fan favorite when he has competed at Accord. Johnson captured the prestigious event in 2010 and is a threat to win whenever he signs in to compete. King Ferry, New York's Mike Mahaney has enjoyed a tremendous season in racing capturing two modified track titles along the way while competing in a variety of equipment that shows his adaptability in any form of race car. Mahaney led a good portion of last year's event before running into some late race problems.
Middletown, New York's Chuck McKee has enjoyed some strong runs in the event and the many time OCFS Modified champion always comes into town with a fast hot rod. "Hollywood" Craig Mitchell is also expected in for the event. Mitchell is a past "Run What You Brung" winner at Accord and should be raring to go this time around.
Accord Speedway offers some great in-house driving talent as newly named track champion, "The Jeffer" Jeff Heotzler Sr will be out to defend his turf as the 2015 speedway champion. Jeff enjoyed a great season in 2015 with three wins behind the wheel of the potent Mel Schrufer owned Academy Transmission hot rod. "Iron" Mike Ricci, who scored four wins during the season, is a master of the short track real estate and will have his Backwoods Brew/Direct Fleet Service/Halmar International sponsored racer set for the King of the Catskills headliner, an event he has captured twice in the past. Two time winner in 2015, "The Rocket" Robbie Green, brings a vast amount of experience into the event as his racing career was restarted this season with one of the fine race cars out of the United Pump and Tank stable. Additional winners in 2015 include "The Rhinebeck Rocket" Brad Rothaupt who teamed up with "Primetime" Scott Ferrier in 2015. "Tommy Gun" Tommy Johnson captured a win earlier in the season. Jeff Heotzler Jr romped to victory last week on the Night of Champions at the speedway and has more than enough in the tank to provide some stout opposition for the rest of the field. Former track champion, Jackie Brown scored a win as did JR Heffner. "Showtime" Danny Tyler also scored a win during the season and shook his racer down last week for an expected run in the event. "The DC Express" Danny Creeden was aboard the Barry White owned Deka Battery chariot last week and put on a good show in the racer. "The Legend" Richie Eurich, "Double J" Joe Judge, Mark Pullen, Dave Hinsch, Corey Lowitt, Willy Auchmoody, Ken Ferrier and many others will be showcased as they do their best earn their way into the starting feature line-up and looking for the $5,000.00 pot of gold at the Lucas Oil Products Victory Lane.
The Escape RV Sportsman/Healey Brothers Group Spec Sportsman will be in action together and pointing towards a $1,500.00 prize as new Sportsman track champion "Mr Excitement" Kevin Ward heads up a top flight contingent seeking to pull off the big win. Ward earned five wins during the season in his Premier Auto Body racer to earn his third track title at Accord. Robbie Knipe was the Spec Sportsman champion in his Pendergast Recycling racer and earned the title with two wins and a ton of consistency. Dave Werber, Jimmy Wells, Jesse Marks, Rich Ricci III and Phil Goetchius all scored Sportsman wins in 2015 and considered contenders for Friday night. Joe Giachinta, Ralph Ronk, Jeff Hulseapple and the recently returning Mike Barrett, Dave Coene, Brad Cicio and Milton Mann will be among the Accord stars preparing for a drive to glory.
The Spec Sportsman contingent at the speedway have enjoyed solid race finishes throughout the season as the division is jam-packed with driving talent. In addition to the champion Robbie Knipe, feature winners included Brandon McGill, Kenny Hinsch, Allison Ricci, Ed Dachenhausen, Nick Johnson, Dan Speedling, Winter Mead, Nick Plumstead, Patrick Murphy and last week's winner Phil Johnson. The roster was beefed up in August with the addition of former two time track champion Kyle Rohner and Stage One Modified star Collin DuBois. Additional drivers expected in include Danny Cross, Joey Bruning, Nick Soules, Jimmy Kraus and Jimmy Johnson.
The thrill a second Four Cylinder Bombers will also be on the race card. One hundred laps of racing on the Accord clay will determine the winner of the $2,000.00 prize offered up by the speedway. At the last Enduro event in July, George Zeininger outlasted a stout field of competition to win capture the win with Ed DeGrote III finishing second and Paul Harding completing the podium. Zeininger, who has always mastered the tricky quarter miler, will be a favorite and another great field is expected in for this edition of the event.
A look back over the years of the prestigious event have shown a dominance of Accord regulars in being able to more than hold their own against most of the outside invaders. The event began in 2005 and has shown a great history of tremendous battles between both outside competition and the track regulars.
