Accord, NY - Accord Speedway Halted By Mother Nature; Racers Reunion A Huge Success
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
Accord Speedway Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer were hoping for some relief from Mother nature as they prepared for a great night of racing and the first of what is hoped to be an annual event for the past driving stars of Accord that created the legacy for the great racing action that continues today. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and all of the racing scheduled to take place was wiped out by a storm that rolled in and decided to stick around for awhile.
Undaunted, the Palmer Family carried on with the Racers Reunion and the event proved to be a huge success as a great group of fans from the surrounding areas came out to pay tribute to the early stars and cherish some fond memories of the racing and the many friendships they made with the drivers over the years. Some drivers were still signing autographs as darkness fell upon the speedway.
The great efforts of organizers Frank Bush and Jim Douglas brought out nearly 75 drivers from the past at Accord to chat about their past exploits on the speedway and what made the speedway so captivating to them to begin and some complete their racing careers there. Announcers Tim Adams and Steve Pados began the interview sessions just before 6 PM and took a break to call hot laps. In the middle of the hot lap sessions, the rain began to fall and despite the efforts of the drivers to keep the track raceable, the rain increased and the hot laps were halted and finally the races were cancelled.
Alerting the fans the interview and autograph sessions would continue despite the rain, Adams and Pados conducted many more interviews throughout the remainder of the evening until they too were halted by the increasing rain storms.
While the weather hindered the activities, more than thirty plus interviews were handled and some of the drivers from the past included Ray Anderson, Russ Meyer, Jimmy Banks, Donnie Beesmer, Steve Conklin, Barry Davis, Bert Irwin Jr, Hank Goranson, Wayne Gundburg, Howard Osterhout, Elwood Hewitt, Tom Matthews, Bruce Carman, Bill Judge, Doug Tyler Sr and Jr, Brian Lynch, John Markle, Rich Ricci Sr and John VanLeuven. Current drivers included Ray Tarantino, Rich Ricci Jr and Hunter Lapp. Promoter Gary Palmer thanked the drivers and fans for their support of the evening.
Organizer Jim Douglas told of the long hours involved in making the event happen and also thanking everyone for the making the evening such a long and lasting memory. Douglas along with Frank Bush were honored by the speedway for their hard working efforts and dedication. WRWD Radio Personality "Uncle" Mike Hansen was also honored for his hard work and dedication to the speedway.
Plans are already ongoing for an even bigger and better event in 2018 with the hopes Mother Nature will not turn on the faucets for an evening. Many thanks to everyone who braved the suspect weather to honor the many drivers who helped place Accord on the racing map.
