Matt Hulsizer Wins Brewerton Speedway Modified Thriller Over Matt Sheppard

By Dave Medler - BREWERTON, N.Y - August 21, 2015 - Matt Hulsizer out of Bridgeport, NY came into Friday nightís racing action with only one Brewerton Speedway feature win in the Tracey Road Equipment Modifieds, that came during the 2012 season.

In the 35-lap feature Hulsizer would chase Vic Coffey from the drop of the green finally finding a way by Coffey to be scored the new leader with 10-laps to go.

Just when it looked like Hulsizer would drive away for the win, the yellow would wave with 5-laps to go, putting the heavy hitters right on top of Hulsizer for a shootout to the finish.

Matt Sheppard who started sixteenth would move into second with 3-laps to go and set his sights on Hulsizer. Sheppard would pull even with Hulsizer in every turn of the speedway, running the bottom. Coming into three and four on the final lap, Hulsizer ran the top as Sheppard dug deep down low setting up a drag race to the checkers. Hulsizer was not to be denied winning by 00.258 at the checkers.

An emotional Matt Hulsizer dedicated his win to his mother in-law in victory lane.

Other winners on Firehouse Subs Night at the races were, Tony Finch II (SUNY Canton Sportsman) Jim Bogett (Pro Race Cars Mod Lites) Chuck Powelczyk (Hiltonís Automotive Four-Cylinders).

Vic Coffey would bolt out to the early lead to start the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment Modified feature while being chased by Matt Hulsizer who went from his fourth starting spot to second on the opening lap.

With 5-laps complete, Coffey was still setting the pace out front while Hulsizer chased just a few car lengths back.  Behind the top two, Chris Hile, Jim Witko Jr. and Ryan Phelps battled three-wide for third through fifth.

At the 15-lap the yellow would wave slowing down the intense racing throughout the field that saw the top-five on the scoring tower with Coffey still leading the way followed by Hulsizer, Phelps, Hile and Ryan Bartlett. The second five showed the heavy hitters Pat Ward, Billy Decker, Larry Wight, Matt Sheppard and Chad Phelps.

On lap-20 Coffey was still having his best run of the season out front as Hulsizer was right in his tire tracks running second and looking for a way by. Phelps, Hile, Ward, Bartlett, Wight and Sheppard were still in a slug-fest racing for position just before a quick caution.

With 10-laps to go, after hounding Coffey almost the entire race, Hulsizer found the speed he needed on the bottom of the speedway to drive by Coffey to be scored the new leader.

Just when it looked like Hulsizer would drive away to win, the yellow would wave on lap-30 to set up a shootout to the checkers.

Matt Sheppard would move into second with 3-laps to go and took off after Hulsizer. Over the final laps, with Hulsizer running the top and Sheppard the bottom, Sheppard will pull even with Hulsizer in the turns with Hulsizerís momentum giving him just enough speed to keep the narrow lead. In turn four coming down for the checkers, Hulsizer looked to slide up out of the top groove allowing Sheppard to pull even. Hulsizer was able to keep control and win the drag race back to the checkers, winning by a narrow 00.258 by AMB scoring. Larry Wight, Chris Hile and Ryan Bartlett finished third through fifth.

When the 25-lap SUNY Canton Sportsman took the green, the field stacked up in turns one and two causing contact between Corey Barker and Mike Stanton, causing both cars to roll over. Both drivers got out of their cars uninjured.

When the feature took the green again Alan Fink would grab the lead setting the pace until a yellow on lap-4 that would tighten the field up. On the restart Tony Finch II would use the momentum on the top of the speedway to be scored the new leader.

With 10-laps complete, Finch was setting a quick pace running alone at the front of the field. Behind Finch, Fink, Brent Joy and Jack Meeks, Mike Prentice and Stephen Denton tried to close the gap while fighting for positions.

With 10-laps to go it was still Finch running quick laps at the front of the field. Brent Joy had moved into second and closed within a few car lengths as Meeks, Fink and Prentice still showed in the top-five.

On lap-20 Meeks, a three-time feature winner, would move into second, giving him 5-laps to find a way to pull off the victory. Meeks would get within a few car lengths of Finch but no closer as Finch would go on to his second win of the season. Brent Joy, Stephen Denton and Kevin Root would finish third through fifth.

In the 20-lap Pro Race Cars Mod Lite feature Doug Williams would lead until lap-11 when point leader Jim Bogett would take over the top-spot. Bogett would grab the narrow win over Jeff Isabell Jr., Joe Isabell who is chasing Bogett in the points finished third, with Doug Williams and Jeff Sykes rounding out the top-five.

Chuck Powelczyk would take the lead from Sam Curcie on a lap-2 restart and then went on to dominate the 15-lap Hiltonís Automotive Four-Cylinder feature, his 82 win at the speedway. The race from second on back was close that saw Chris Bonoffski, Jacobe Palmiter, Colby Herzog and Sam Carista finish second through fifth.
