Matt Sheppard And Dave Marcuccilli Victorious On Night One Of Brewerton Speedway Duel At The Demon; Modified Super DIRTcar Series Saturday, September 19
By Dave Medler - BREWERTON, NY – September 18, 2015 – On Friday night a star-studded field of Big Block Modifieds and Sportsman filled the pits on night one of Brewerton Speedway's ‘Duel at the Demon’ weekend.
Thirty-three Big Block Modifieds took four heats and two consi’s to set the 26 car starting field for the $3,000-to-win 50-lap feature. The feature saw incredible racing not only at the front, but throughout the field that featured two and three wide racing on a lightning quick racing surface.
In the feature, Peter Britten would take advantage of his pole starting spot after the redraw and would lead the race's first 27-laps. Britten’s time in the lead was anything but easy as he would hold off challenges from Chuck Bower, Brett Hearn, Vic Coffey and Jimmy Phelps while other drivers in the top-five were ready pounce on any mistakes.
The whole race would change on lap-28 when Phelps and teammate Sheppard would split Britten exiting turn-four taking over the top two spots, setting up an HBR Troyer battle as the laps clicked off in the second half of the feature.
Sheppard would battle Phelps and having what looked like passes for the lead negated because of quick caution periods. Finally using the top of the speedway Sheppard made the winning pass on Phelps on lap-37. Once in the lead Sheppard would switch to the bottom of the speedway and go on to his fourth Brewerton win of the season after collecting the track championship on Labor Day Weekend.
Billy Decker would make a strong run from the back of the field after a flat tire on lap-3 to finish second. Jimmy Phelps, Chuck Bower, also from the back of the field after going to the pits on lap-3 with Decker, would finish fourth and Vic Coffey fifth. Larry Wight, Pat Ward, Chris Hile, Rob Bellinger and Peter Britten would complete the top-ten.
After exiting his FX Caprara Chevy/Camara Slate/HBR/No.9H/Troyer Matt Sheppard talked about his win.
“We drew a bad number and had to start like a normal Friday night back in 15th-16th somewhere like that. We just had a good car tonight, Jimmy (Phelps) had a good car. I was wondering if Jimmy had nine-lives. Every time I would get by the caution would come out. We had a real outstanding race car tonight. It’s a lot of fun when you get a racy track like that and be able to come up through the field like that with the quality of good cars that were here tonight.”
The FX Caprara Car Companies Upstate Sportsman Alliance Series would see 34 cars sign in the pits. It would take four heats and two consi’s to set the 24 car starting field to battle for the $1,000-to-win winner's share. Also up for grabs was a coveted starting spot for the lucrative 50-lap $2,500-to-win Industrial Tire Of CNY Sportsman Shootout as part of the prestigious 30th Annual Sunoco Fulton Ethanol Facility Outlaw 200 Weekend on October 2-3.
Dave Marcuccilli would jump from his third starting spot to the lead on the opening lap with Todd Root grabbing second from his fourth starting spot to start the 35-lap feature.
Just like the modified feature, the racing throughout the field in the Sportsman field was two and three wide and cars battled for position.
Most of the attention was right at the front of the field as Root could get to Marcuccilli’s back bumper on many laps but most of the race Root was within striking distance a few car lengths back until the final lap. On the white flag lap, lapped traffic came into play as Root made one final run for the win but came up short by just 00.247 at the checkers. The race for third on back was tight right to the checkers that saw James Michael Friesen, Ron Davis III and track champion Jack Meeks finishing third through fifth.
After doing the roof top dance on his Page Trucking/Mike Laird Construction/Fingerlakes Community Recycling Center/No.M1/Bicknell, Dave Marcuccilli talked about his victory.
“I’m a little tired. That was all I had for 35-laps. Root was running real good, he poked his nose in there a couple times. I drove it for all I had for 35-laps and I was able to hold him off. We got loose as the bite went away, I was worried about that. That little boy who drew for me was huge. If Root drew ahead of me, he would be standing here.”
The Brewerton Speedway swings right back into action on Saturday, September 19th for day two of Duel at the Demon Weekend. On the race card will the stars and cars of the Modified Super DIRTcar Series as they will have a 100-lap event plus SUNY Canton Sportsman and Pro Race Cars Mod Lites.
Adult grand stand admission will be $25/ 14 yrs. old and younger $10/ Pit $40. Pit gates will open at 4:30 and grandstands at 5:30.
