TIM VAN HORN JR TOPS 33 MODIFIEDS FOR FIRST CAREER WIN
RICHIE HITZLER FINDS VICTORY LANE
FOR XCEL CHASSIS DOUBLE HEADER
You can say what you want about one sport being better than the other. I have to tell you baseball has nothing on Tim Van Horn Jr. and his Xcel Chassis modified. Baseball has the 7th inning stretch and Tim Van Horn had a seven year stretch. On Saturday May 2nd, at Thunder Mountain Speedway, he topped 33 Modifieds to bring home his first career win and to make it even better a $1000 payday.
You knew it would be a great day with the track conditions that Karl Spoonhower and his crew provided. Heat race winners Abby Price, Will Eastman, Korey Inglin and Van Horn Jr. lined up the feature as did Nathan Brinker with a consolation win . Joe McCabe and Tim Van Horn brought the 33 car field to the green for the 20 lap feature event. Van Horn took the point going into turn 1 with McCabe and Eastman on his tail. Mid pack saw the rookie of the year contender Billy Koch picking his way through the field. The Xcel Chassis rental car is always fast. It would start 23rd after qualifying through the consi with Nick Mady behind the wheel.
By lap 15, Mady had closed in on Van Horn and Eastman as they were battling for the top spot. A late race restart set up the three-way battle. Would Van Horn Jr. lose his first victory. On the final restart,Van Horn Jr. would hit every mark, lead every lap and bring home his first career victory. As he pulled into tech, many drivers and crew were there to congratulate the driver.
Van Horn Jr. had the hollywood smile that will last all week. Tim talked about the race. “I just can't think Gene and Doug for maintaining my car and transporting it to the track every week. I can’t believe I just won on the tour with a 33 car field. It is tough but it's the best you'll ever have. The caliper that these driver race is so intense it just makes you a better.” Rookie of the Year contender, Billy Koch, would have the highest finishing rookie for the weekend. He finished 7th on Saturday, 11th on Sunday. The young gun continues to impress his fellow competitors,
On Sunday, Xcel Chassis found 26 modifieds finishing a two day weekend at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Many wondered if Van Horn Jr. would bring home $2000 in one weekend. Unfortunately due to prior work commitments Van Horn jr. would not make the call.
Richie Hitzler has started the 2015 season with multiple trips to victory lane. All the battles were intense and tonight was no different. Hard racing throughout the field with the biggest battle up front. Korey Inglin had a rough Saturday night going pitside for a broken throttle cable linkage with two laps to go. On Sunday, Korey was leading until lap 17 saw his car lose 3 spots for unknown reasons. This set up a classic three way battle with Hitzler, Brian Carber and Nick Mady. Carber had the point going into turn three with Hitzler setting up a slide job, in the turn, to take the top spot. Mady had the Xcel rental right there to make a move. Hitzler would take the checkered flag. After victory lane pictures, Hitzler talked of the win and the season. “You can only wish to open a season the way we have. The drivers that run the tour have the most experience in the series. Just getting a top 3 is awesome. Bringing home the win has you already thinking of how to make the car faster for next week. The cars are all the same, being a spec division, so it comes down to driver and crews.”
The Xcel Chassis 600 modified tour division will have Mother's Day weekend. You can catch the weekly divisions this weekend. Look for the schedule on the Xcel webpage at www.xcelchassis.com
