Rico Abreu Opens PA Midget Swing with Win at Path Valley

It was what the fans of Pennsylvania had been waiting for and no one went home disappointed as thirty-two midgets competed for starting positions in the twenty-five lap main event on the first of three nights of racing for the USAC/ARDC Midget co-sanctioned Pennsylvania Midget Swing at the Path Valley Speedway.

Path Valley offered the competitors just what they were looking for  Ė a wide surface that offered plenty of room for passing and sliders!

Tanner Thorson jumped into the lead from his sixth place starting spot and led Abreu, Kevin Thomas, Tracy Hines and Christopher Bell through the first five laps.  Bell, who started fifteenth, was on the move and made his way up to third to trail Thorson and Abreu with ten complete.  Spenser Bayston was passing his fair share of cars as he cracked the top five on lap nine.

It was a three car battle for the lead as Thorson led Abreu and Bell until Bryan Clauson ran into mechanical issues and drew the caution at the half way point.    Thorson and Bell ran the bottom of the track while Abreu persisted on the top side.   In what has become the classic Rico Abreu style, Abreu took the lead from Tanner Thorson.

Bell became Abreu's challenger.  The yellow flag was certainly not a friend of Bell's  as he excuted a slider to take the lead but the caution waved and his efforts were negated.  Without a completed lap, Abreu went back to the lead and continued on for the win.

Bell finished second followed by Kevin Thomas, Spencer Bayston and Jerry Coons, Jr. who was behind the wheel of the Mike Heffner owned No. 27 midget.  Tracy Hines finished sixth followed by ARDCís Billy Pauch, Jr. who was in the cockpit of Greg Fitzpatrickís, DeGre Engineering No. 28.  Brenden Bright finished 8th followed by Thorson, the early race leader.  Steven Drevicki, the current ARDC point leader rounded out the top ten.

Thorson set fast time during time trials followed by Kunz teammate, K. Thomas.  Coons was third fastest with Abreu and ARDCís Nick Wean rounding out the top five.

Heat wins went to Wean, Thomas, Bell and Clauson with Drevicki picking up the win in the twelve lap B Main.

Action moves to the Lincoln Speedway tonight and then on to Susquehanna Speedway Park on Thursday.
