MILE POINT SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES MODIFIED STAGGERED START TIMES THE REMAINDER OF
KIRKWOOD, NY…On Saturday Five Mile Point Speedway announced a new staggered start time for the weekly Modified teams for the remainder of the regular Saturday night racing schedule. The new staggered start time is an effort to take some of the pressure off the many teams that travel a long distance to be at the speedway each Saturday night. The weekly racing card will continue to begin at 6 p.m.
For Modified teams that will be competing at Five Mile Point Speedway the remainder of the 2014 season the staggered starting time will go in to effect immediately this Saturday night. The Modified teams will not hit the speedway surface until after the Figure 8 Feature for their hot lap sessions (approx. 7:15). The Modified heats will then be staged after the weekly Sportsman feature with the Modified feature concluding the weekly racing program.
Five Mile Point Speedway track owner Andrew Harpell commented, “We recognize the tremendous support we receive from our traveling teams in the weekly Modified division and we wanted to shorten their time at the speedway.” “With our expanded pit area on the backstretch there is plenty of room for teams to negotiate their haulers in to the facility later in the program and still have their weekly parking spot. In our old pit area off turn 4 we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this.”
He added, “We have utilized a staggered Modified starting time for several years with our traditional Columbus Day Weekend event and it works out well. This will be a big plus for our weekly teams and our fans that are just interested in that class.”
Current Modified point leader Nick Petrilak summed up the response of the weekly Modified teams when he posted on his Facebook page, “This is a WONDERFUL move one of the best in a long time. This will now eliminate "no pass nascar heat races" and a lead to a lot shorter of a night for the Mod teams.” At the driver’s meeting where this was announced Defending Track Champion Mike Colsten also applauded the change, “I probably live closer to the speedway than anyone in the class and this will not only help me but also our crew that wrench’s on the car.”
All of the standard race times will remain unchanged, just the time that the Modifieds are on the racetrack. Pit gates will still open at 3 p.m. with practice at 5:15 p.m. Racing will still get underway at 6:00 p.m. for all of the other weekly classes at the speedway.
This Saturday night the Street Stock division will take center stage with a $1,000 to win special event. The 20 lap event will highlight a big night of racing for the weekly teams on the quarter mile oval.
This Saturday night will be Conklin Community Night and Youth Night at Five Mile Point Speedway. All kids 17 and younger will be admitted free of charge in to the grandstand area. All Conklin, New York residents will also be admitted free in to the grandstand area by simply presenting photo i.d.
