KIRKWOOD, NY…All day rain could not dampen the spirits of the fans and race teams that converged on Five Mile Point Speedway Saturday.  A whopping 152 race teams were on hand with an amazing 333 green flag laps run on the quarter mile oval.  When it was all said and done Mike Colsten found himself back in the Modified victory lane for the second time this season.  Colsten, the defending Track Champion reclaimed the point lead entering this  Saturday night’s Season Championship point finale.

With Season Championship Night only days away Mike Colsten positioned himself this past Saturday to try and defend his 2014 Track Championship.  His victory in the 30 lap Modified feature event was far from easy.  Jamie Batzel and Joel Batzel sat on the front row for the start of the feature and it was Jamie who darted out to the initial lead. The first caution of the race occurred on lap 1 when Anthony Perrego spun in turn three.  On the restart Jamie Batzel moved back out front with Barry White in tow.  White looked strong as he kept the pressure on Batzel as Colsten began to advance from his fifth starting spot.

Colsten pulled in to second place on lap 8 and wasted no time in working past Batzel on lap 9.  The caution flag would fly again on lap 9 for a spinning Brian Weaver in turn 4.  Tom McGurrin, Randall Paxton and Chris Ostrowsky were all involved and able to continue as well as Weaver.  With Perrego and Weaver in the back of the field the fans knew there would be a couple of potential charges to the front, they weren’t disappointed.

As the race hit the midway point the top five consisted of Colsten, White, Jamie Batzel, Chris Wood and Crambo.  Perrego had already charged back to sixth at this point and set his sights on the top five.  Perrego was on a mission as he broke in to the top five on lap 16 and was in to the runner up slot as a caution slowed the pace for the final time on the 22nd circuit.  Colsten saw his lead evaporate and Perrego, the six time feature winner was looking for number seven.  Colsten got a great restart and the duo hooked up in a tremendous battle for the lead.  Perrego was equally fast but on two occasions hit the heavy cushion awkwardly which allowed Colsten to open his lead back up.  On the final circuit Perrego changed his line trying to “diamond” the quarter mile but Colsten was able to hang on at the stripe for a car length victory.  Perrego wound up second.  White had his best finish of the season in third.  Jamie Batzel was fourth and like Perrego, Weaver charged back from 23rd to finish fifth.

In Sportsman action Brian White took the lead from Mike Wilmot on lap 9 and was looking to try and pad his point lead.  In the end it would be another White, Eddie White collecting the win after a lap 19 pass in lapped traffic. Eddie White, the father of Brian remarked in victory lane, “The lapped traffic was so heavy at the end I didn’t know if I had won or not.”  Eddie White was followed by Brian White, Wilmot, Mike Austin and Kenny Hammond.

Mike Stoddard collected his first IMCA Modified victory at Five Mile Point Speedway in over five years on Saturday.  Stoddard took the lead from Jason Benjamin on lap 5 and never relinquished his lead for the duration of the 20 lapper.  Scott Bennett charged from his tenth starting spot for second with Tyler Stoddard, Jake Maynard and Benjamin rounding out the top five.

A pair of 20 lap Street Stock feature events were held on Saturday with Randy Fox and Ryan Codington emerging the winners.  Fox took the lead on lap 1 of the held over feature and led wire to wire.  Codington took over the lead from Matt Spencer on lap 5 of the regularly scheduled feature and held off John Cooper, Jr. for the win.

Kenny Underwood was the Lightning Cat Expert Feature winner on Saturday with a dominating performance.  Jeremy Warren was the Lightning Cat Novice feature winner.  Steven Sherwood collected his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway victory in the 20 lap 600 c.c. Modified main event holding off a number of challenges from Korey Inglin.  Lancen Albanese was the Factory Stock feature winner.

Dustin Purdy recorded his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway victory in the CRSA Sprint Car 25 lap feature event.  Twenty-three starters took the green flag in their feature event.

A lingering band of rain showers hovered over the speedway for most of the entire day.  With the point season winding down track crews were determined to get the program in.  Track officials did a fantastic job in running the program off despite a very ambitious program that included Kiddie Rides.  Modified rookie Nick Petrilak entered the night as the point leader but saw that lead evaporate after a tough night that saw him involved in several cautions during the 30 lap feature event.  All of the point races are tightly contested entering this Saturday night’s Season Championship event.  The Modifieds will compete in a 50 lapper paying $2,000 to win.
