CREEDEN MAKES IT TWO MODIFIED FEATURE WINS IN A ROW AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY
ON SATURDAY NIGHT
KIRKWOOD, NY… Danny Creeden completed an unusual feat in the Five Mile Point Speedway record books by winning the 30 lap Modified feature event on Saturday night. He became the second driver to win two Modified features in a span of less than six day this season. Danny Johnson pulled off the unusual back to backs earlier this season. Over the span of 65 years at Five Mile Point Speedway this has unofficially happened only 3 other times.
Tyler Siri and Glenn Knapp led the Modified field to the green flag in the 30 lap feature event on Saturday. Siri quickly powered out front with his sites on his first feature win of the season. Siri was quick on the outside of the speedway as he pulled away from the field. Meanwhile Creeden began to advance from his ninth starting spot. Current point leader P.J. Goodwin also began to advance from his eighth starting slot.
Shaun Walker looked strong once again as he tried to close in on the high flying Siri. Creeden was “on rails” as he moved in to third and then past Walker for second on lap 7. At the same time the caution would fly bunching up the field. Despite being dialed in on the top of the speedway Siri opted to restart on the inside of the front row. Creeden used this to his advantage and powered around on the same lap and would never look back.
All eyes were now on the battle among the top ten as the positions changed lap after lap. Walker worked all lanes trying to advance around Siri as Mike Colsten and Goodwin battled. Creeden would go on for his second victory of the season without any serious challengers for the balance of the 30 lapper. Siri held on for second with Walker coming across in third. Goodwin advanced to fourth with Colsten finishing fifth. Jeff Crambo rallied from a lap 1 spin to finish sixth with Brian Puckett making his return after a year’s absence to finish seventh. Barry White, Joel Batzel and Glenn Knapp rounded out the top ten.
Brian White grabbed his third Sportsman victory of the season in the 20 lap event. White, the defending Track Champion started ninth and powered past Ryan Higgs for the lead on lap 8. Higgs had his great run come to an end on lap 13 due to mechanical problems. Randy Green charged back from a lap 1 tangle to finish second. Chris Stevens had his best career Five Mile Point Speedway finish with his Crate powered car to finish third. Joey Bonetti and Mike Barrett completed the top five.
Randy Marsh led wire to wire in the 20 lap Street Stock feature event to record his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway victory on Saturday. Despite the wire to wire win it did not come easy. Marsh used the outer limits of the quarter mile oval as he and runner-up Ryan Codington ran side by side the final seven laps. Marsh and Codington were followed across the line by Ricky Davis Sr., Kevin Garland and Randy Fox.
The first time winner trend continued with the IMCA Modified division. Jason Benjamin emerged the winner of the 20 lapper in a fantastic feature event. K.C. Cole and Benjamin ran side by side for the first 17 laps of the event. Cole jumped the turn 4 cushion on lap 17 allowing Benjamin to work past. Defending Track Champion Matt Cole would work past K.C. Cole on lap 19 for a second place finish with K.C. Cole finishing third. Gary Roberts and Shawn Bruce rounded out the top five.
Other feature winners on Saturday were Kenny Underwood in the Lightning Cat Experts (his second straight), Matt McKernan in the Lightning Cat Novice, Ryan Brockner in the Factory Stocks. For Brockner it was his first career win at the speedway. Marty Kelley III was a first time winner in the Slingshot Pro class with Cody Motto the Junior Slingshot winner.
COUNTER POINTS…A great night of racing was in the record books at 10 p.m. on an ideal weather night for racing…Thank goodness for the foam blocks at Five Mile Point Speedway as Lightning Cat Novice racer Jason Colwell Jr. slammed the turn 1 wall full throttle in his heat race…His impact was into the foam and he emerged uninjured in what could have been an otherwise serious incident…This Saturday night will see Fan Appreciation Night – Grandstand admission is FREE!
