HAGERSTOWN POSTPONES ROBERTS MEMORIAL
HAGERSTOWN, MD – Postponed until August 10th!
That was the final word from Hagerstown Speedway General Manager Lisa Plessinger after two showers were received during Saturday evenings attempted running of the 48th Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial under the Three State Flyers Dirt Late Model banner for the Buchanan Auto Stores late models. The event is the longest running and most prestigious on the Hagerstown schedule for the late models and has had a winner every year since the inaugural race in 1966 when Ray Dovel took the honors.
Scattered and isolated showers have been around every day the past week and some missed the speedway prior to getting underway but then a delay occurred when a light shower arrived following the drivers meeting.
After a near hour delay, warm-ups began and just after all divisions had completed them with time trials preparing to begin, another shower that suddenly showed on radar to the south, had Hagerstown in its cross hairs.
With the second amount of precipitation received coupled with humidity, it was obvious that after attempting to run the track in again, it was just not going to happen in reasonable time and deemed unsafe even for the mud trucks.
Plessinger and Three State Flyer owner Doug Timmons met and reviewed options with both the TSF and Hagerstown schedules to complete the event and Saturday, August 10th was suitable in both cases and will be run as follows:
The event will now be double titled the 33rd Annual Ernie D’s Shorty Bowers Bull Durham Championship/ 48th Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial paying $3,000 to win and sanctioned by the Three State Flyers on Manitowoc Employee Night. The winner will receive two trophies. Saturday’s Ernie D’s pure stocks and D&D Auto Recycling hobby stocks were already scheduled for the program along with the National Speed Supply/Dave Padula Motorsports four cylinders. The Classic Racing Series have also been moved to the new date. The special stunt exhibition show that was to perform will be scheduled for a later date. The Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman event will not be made up.
Rain checks are good for any race date however would be best to use for the August 10 event where the Gate Admission is $20 and Pit gate is $30.
