Home-Track Advantage Works For Arndt In 600 Mods; Whitaker and Detweiler Also Win On Fair Races Night No. 2
KUTZTOWN, PA - Home track advantage paid dividends on Thursday night at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway.
Brett Arndt, a former Micro-Sprint champion at Kutztown, drove Doug Borger's 'X' Xcel 600 Modified to victory in the second night of the Kutztown Fair Races.
Arndt, of nearby Topton, Pa., was making just his second start in the scaled-down Modified class.
The winning move for the ARDC Midget rookie came on an early-race restart when he powered to the outside of race leader Jeremy Guistwite. Once in front, Arndt dominated the remainder of the 25-lap distance.
Guistwite was second, followed by Rich McGeady, George Loux and dirt Modified racer Butch Getz. After winning his heat earlier in the night, Getz spun on the opening lap of the feature and rebounded for a top-five.
Kyle Gardner and Getz were best in XCel 600 Modified qualifying.
Ben Whitaker led from start-to-finish in the 25-lap Briggs & Stratton Slingshot Tour Mid-Atlantic Region event. But it wasn't an easy victory.
Whitaker nosed out Ryan Smith by mere inches at the line.
Smith, in the Marc Daniels No. 357, drove to the inside of Whitaker as the leaders rounded turns three and four for the final time. Contact was made as the pair drag-raced to the finish, with Whitaker narrowly using the topside to his advantage.
Jordan Henn was third, with Billy Van Inwegen Jr. and Tyler Miller completing the front five.
By virtue of her sixth-place finish, Shannon Smith was crowned the 2007 Kutztown Slingshot champion.
Slingshot heat winners were Ryan Smith, Henn and Whitaker. Brett Bieber topped the consolation.
In 25-lap Champ Kart action, Ian Detweiler was victorious in a competitive, lead-swapping affair. Gary Edwards was second, with Tim Buckwalter third.
Thursday's event marked the conclusion of the '07 season at Kutztown. Keep posted on: www.kutztownfairspeedway.com for updates.
