KUTZTOWN, PA - The time has come.
Spring semester classes at Kutztown University are winding down, meaning the midweek excitement of Micro-Sprint and Slingshot racing will return to the one-fifth-mile clay oval Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway.
The 2008 Season Opener, run in memory of Goldie Meitzler, is set for Wed., May 14. The 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots will be in competition, while representatives from Relay for Life (an organization striving to fight cancer) will be on hand distributing information and taking donations.
Gates open at 4 p.m., with practice at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. for the first of 13 scheduled events at the facility this year.
The lid-lifter will kick off the championship battles at Kutztown for 2008.
"We're very optimistic about the 2008 season," said Kerry Meitzler, who - along with his family - assumed full control of the Kutztown track for this season.
"The response from drivers and fans has been very good since we put out our schedule in March."
New for the 2008 season will be the use of AMB Transponder scoring in all three divisions. Transponders will be mandatory on all cars and will be available for nightly rental at $10 or for purchase at $275.
"The transponders will only help the in the long run," offered Meitzler. "The fans should enjoy a more streamlined show with yellow-flag line-ups coming quicker and there will be greater accuracy in scoring for the racers."
2008 spectator admission rates are as follows: Adults - $8; Students (ages 10-17) & Seniors - $5; and children under 10 are free.
