Kutztown Opener May 6; Late Model/Modified Challenge On Tap

KUTZTOWN, PA - Race fans, be ready.

Midweek competition at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway is set to commence on May 6, kicking off a summer tradition of Wednesday racing at the clay oval located in the shadows of Kutztown University.

The 2009 opener will honor the memory of Goldie Meitzler, matriarch of the racing family that promotes the track, and longtime race fan Ronald "Stringy" Frey. Headlining the show will be 600cc Micro-Sprints, running wingless at the one-fifth-mile track this season.

Also on the Opening Night card will be 270cc Micro-Sprints, Slingshots and a special appearance by the touring Young Gun 390 Sprints, a stepping-stone division into full-fledged Micro-Sprint competition.

The championship battles for the track's regular divisions will get underway at the lid-lifter.

Additionally, several of the region's top dirt Modified and Late Model drivers will race head-to-head in a special Match Race driving XCel 600 Modifieds. Last year, Modified drivers strapped into 600 Modifieds for a shootout and Mike Gular picked up the win. The participants will be made public in the coming weeks.

Regular Wednesday action continues through June 17. There will be no racing on June 24 and July 1 due to a Folk Festival held on the fairgrounds property. Racing resumes July 8 and runs through Aug. 11-13 when three consecutive nights of competition conclude the season with the Kutztown Fair serving as a backdrop.

Doug Borger's XCel 600 Modifieds, scaled-down dirt Modifieds, will join the 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots on 11 occasions beginning May 13.

In other Kutztown news, Pete Knappenberger has been named race director for '09. Knappenberger, a local radio show host and former Slingshot racer, will work as a liaison between racers and track officials on race night.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. for all events.

Grandstand admission prices for 2009 are $8 - Adults, $5 - Students (ages 10-17) and FREE for children under 10 years old. Pit admission is $20. No license will be required. Car entry remains $20.
