Modified and Late Model Stars To Be Part Of Kutztown's May 6 Opener; 600cc Micro-Sprints Debut Wingless As Weekly Class

KUTZTOWN, PA - The 2009 Season Opener at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway is sure to be memorable.

For starters, the Wednesday night, May 6 lid-lifter will mark the debut of the 600cc Micro-Sprint division running wingless - a practice that will continue throughout the year for the first time in speedway history.

Additionally, fans will be treated to a unique Modified vs. Late Model Match Race featuring the region's top drivers strapped into XCel 600 Modifieds, an event that will augment the championship battle kickoffs for the wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots plus a visit by the touring Young Gun 390 Sprints.

Confirmed Modified entrants for the Shootout include seven-time Grandview (Pa.) Speedway champion Jeff Strunk of Mohnton, Pa., recent Big Diamond (Pa.) Raceway Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series winner Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., outstanding young talent Mike Gular of Green Lane, Pa., and accomplished 358-Modified veteran Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Pa.

The Late Model contingent consists of regional star and chassis builder Jim Bernheisel of Jonestown, Pa., defending Grandview champion Chuck Schutz of Pottstown, Pa., consistent Ron Kline of Salford, Pa., and past Grandview title winner Brian Shuey of Shoemakersville, Pa.

The Modified and Late Model racers will compete head-to-head on the one-fifth-mile clay oval. Last year, Kutztown hosted a Modified Driver Shootout in XCel 600 Modifieds and Gular emerged victorious.

The 2009 opener will honor the memory of Goldie Meitzler, matriarch of the racing family that promotes the track, and longtime race fan Ronald "Stringy" Frey.

Regular Wednesday racing continues through June 17. There will be no racing on June 24 and July 1 due to a Folk Festival held on the fairgrounds property. Competition resumes July 8 and runs through Aug. 11-13 when three consecutive nights of action conclude the season with the Kutztown Fair as a backdrop.

XCel 600 Modifieds will join the 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots on 11 occasions during the season beginning May 13.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. for all events.

Grandstand admission prices for 2009 are $8 - Adults, $5 - Students (ages 10-17) and FREE for children under 10 years old. Pit admission is $20. No license will be required. Car entry remains $20.

Competitors are reminded that transponders are mandatory for all divisions in 2009. Rentals will be available at the track for $10 per night with proper photo identification.

New for 2009, Micro-Sprint and Slingshot racers will be rewarded for higher car counts with increased pay scales. On any night when 36 or more competitors sign in, the pay will be adjusted by track management.
