Lewis Wins First In 600cc Micros; Wagner and Stolz Split 270cc Twin 15s; Shannon Smith Wins Slingshots at Kutztown
KUTZTOWN, PA - Shane Lewis earned his first-ever 600cc Micro-Sprint feature win on Tuesday night at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway.
Lewis, starting second, jumped into the lead at the outset of the 20-lap main aboard his Lewis Racing No. 55. Despite a rash of cautions, the teenager never wavered, leading from start to finish.
Opening Night winner Brett Smith fended off Brent Marks in a battle for second place that heated up over the final laps. Consistent Jason Van Doren was fourth and Ryan Shupp completed the front five.
Heat winners for the 20 600cc Micro-Sprints were Ryan Wilson and Charles Cooley.
Sean Stolz became the first repeat winner in any Kutztown division by winning the first RTS Chassis 270cc Micro-Sprint Twin 15, while Eddie Wagner translated his first appearance of the season at the one-fifth-mile clay oval into a victory in the second.
Stolz, of Bloomsburg, Pa., started the first event from the front row and negotiated lapped traffic flawlessly. Stolz survived a scare on the final lap, when Jay Hartman flipped at the exit of turn four.
Stolz dodged the flipping Hartman No. 24 and survived a final-lap restart to record the win. His first came back on May 30. Fifth-starter Pat Bealer raced his No. 44B to a second-place finish, ahead of Ross Perchak (started seventh), Mike Esposito and Terry Schaeffer.
An invert of 10 cars put Wagner on the pole for the second 15-lapper and he controlled the entire event driving his No. 70.
Jeff Hartman made a last-lap advance to second with the No. 39, with Jesse Hartman in third. Ross Perchak zipped by Terry Schaeffer coming to the checkered flag for fourth.
Heat winners for the 34 270cc Micro-Sprints were Perchak, Stolz, Schaeffer and Ryan Wilson. Darin Bartholomew was the consolation winner.
Shannon Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., took over the race lead when T.J. Mayberry's car sustained a flat tire on lap one and was never headed in the 20-lap Slingshot main event. Smith cruised to the win over Steve Hicks, Kyle Rohner, Bob Marino and Trevor Kobylarz.
Slingshot heat winners were Smith and Kobylarz. Twenty-two cars took part in the action.
Racing continues at Kutztown on Wed., July 25 with Twin 15s for the 600cc Micro-Sprints, plus a full show for the 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots.
