CANANDAIGUA NY_ Matt Sheppard has proven again to be a powerful figure in the DIRTcar Modified racing world. The 27 year old Waterloo, NY racing star won last Saturday night at Canandaigua Speedway for his eleventh time at Canandaigua since the start of the 2009 season.

Sheppard did his magic on the half-mile oval before several of our active and retired military personnel on Military Appreciation Night. Several of our military "heroes" enjoyed themselves on the half-mile Ontario County Fairgrounds as Mother Nature attempted to put a stop to the racing program while the DIRTcar Sportsman were on the track. Rain had already cancelled racing events at several other venues in New York State. She would not have the same luck at Canandaigua as track officials fought tooth and nail to preserve the program.

After a short rain delay Sheppard took control of the track from Mike O'Brien on lap 13 and would not relinquish that control for the remainder of the feature. Justin Haers, who won the DIRTcar Modified feature the previous week, passed Danny Johnson late in the race to take second place. Johnson would end up third while Brian Swarthout and Charlie Donk concluded the top five.

Kevin Ridley took the victory over second place Loren Lincoln in the 25 lap DIRTcar Sportsman race. Eric Giguere, who is second in the DIRTcar Sportsman points standing, took third while Nick Guererri and Ricky Newton rounded of the top five.

Defending 2009 Track Champion Mike Welch took his first win of the season in the DIRTcar Stock Car main event. Finishing second was Chris Fisher while Derrick Excell was third. Fourth was Frank Burnell and fifth was Pat Hobbs. Alex Morris won his fourth feature of the season in the Factory Stocks/Pure Stock feature. Second was George LaVare Jr. Third was Ross Lurcock followed by Ted Sweeney and Dale Bush. Gail Logsdon was the winner of the Ladies Race.

LAND OF LEGENDS NOTES: Canandaigua Speedway race officials would like to thank the fans for their patience while the track maintenance crew had to put the track surface back to form after a burst of rain hit the speedway during the late stages of the DIRTcar Sportsman feature... Having a great time in the VIP Towers was Lakewood Meadows, who not only enjoyed the comforts of indoors but a few of its representatives also had a lap or two in the DIRTcar Northeast pace car...Vince Vitale was having a great run, moving up to second and looking to challenge Sheppard for the lead when he broke on lap 20... In addition to the BRP Late Models the DIRTcar Modified, DIRTcar Sportsman, Factory Stocks/Pure Stock will take to the track. The DIRTcar Stock Cars were added to Saturday's line up after Canandaigua track officials decided to postpone the originally scheduled Open Wheel Topless Night. Community Appreciation Night will take place as residents from Phelps, Seneca Falls, Honeoye Falls and Naples will be admitted FREE to the grandstands with valid ID. That is in addition to 18 & under students who are also FREE for this exciting event. Once again, there will be an autograph session at the DIRTcar Merchandise Trailer from 5:30-6:00 with DIRTcar stars Dan Weisner and Eric Giguere. The popular event continues to draw interest and helps race fans prepare for the night's activities
